Creative Writing piece

It is very draining in New York. I just got home from my work at JP Morgan. My name is Benjamin Carter. I live on Broome street and West Broadway. I have lived in new York for seven years now. My boss just got fired because he gave away an important secret someone found out. When I get home my wife is in on the couch.  I sit down next to her. She starts coughing very harshly and it lasts for a while. It sounds like the cough is very bad. She tells me its been like this since the morning. I feel really dreadful for her. I ask her if she needs to go see a doctor, but she says she is okay. I feel wistful for her, because I don’t want her to be sick tomorrow on her 65th birthday. I go to our room and I start to wrap my present, a one of a kind 1986 made mug. When I finish, I call my friend who is a doctor and tell her to come check on my wife. The doctors name is Penelope. Penelope goes to the couch. My wife is fast asleep. My friend puts her hand on my wife’s forehead, and when she takes it off she finds a tool in her bag and takes my wife’s temperature.

“Will she be okay?” I ask.

“She will be fine. She just has a cold,” my friend says back.

“Will she be okay?” I say. Not knowing how Penelope found that out so fast.

“Although, she will have to stay home from work because of this,” my friend says.

“But tomorrow is her 65th birthday!” I tell her.

“Well maybe ,” my friend tells me.

I head to work before my wife wakes up, but I leave her a note on the fridge.

It says that the doctor said to stay home from work today. When I get to work I sign in at the front desk and head upstairs. I say hi to my co worker and sit down at my desk. It is a long, but easy day at work as I go to the subway to get home. I see a box of tissues in a store and I buy them. I also order a birthday cake for my wife. When I get home my wife is sitting on the couch watching television. I get the tissue box from my bag, and hand it to her. Her eyes look like they just got out of a car wash. I ask her if she is okay, but she doesn’t answer. She just leans on my shoulder and l wrap my arms around her. She tells me she wants to order sashimi. I get up and pick up the my phone, I dial 929-231-9376. The ring from the phone reminds me of when I was young, because one day a long time ago in the big sky of Montana…

(Flashback)

It was 2:00 and I was skiing in a place near Bozeman. I was with my mom, dad, and sister. They were going really fast in front of me and I could not catch up. They turned off somewhere and I tried to follow. When I turned my ski hit a rock and I went flying. I blacked out for a little bit long enough for my family to be very far away. I waited for 5 minutes and then I got up and tried to find my family. It was getting too steep so I took of my skies and started waking. I was halfway down the hill, and I could see the lift. I needed a break so I lied down on the side of the run. It was not a very busy day so no one was on the run. I was staring into space when I noticed something on the run, it was a iPhone. Not just any iPhone… my sister’s iPhone. She was just here because she was prank calling random numbers before! That number was 929-231-9376…
“Are you okay?” My wife ask me. “You were staring in the distance for minutes,” she says. “I’m fine,” I say back to her. “I ordered the sashimi just so you know,” my wife says back. “It will arrive shortly,”

What is revision?

Revision is adding more context or detail. It is different from editing because editing is for grammar and spelling.

My revision goal for this piece was to add more of an intro to who Benjamin is.

I think I did pretty well on my goal, because before if you read the piece you would know nothing about him.

Maybe it wasn’t just the iceberg.

When the Titanic sank 105 years ago, people said it hit an iceberg. It did in fact hit an iceberg, but a journalist just found that the sinking of the ship may have accelerated because of a giant coal fire in its hull.

The fire appeared to have started as long as three weeks before the Titanic set off on it’s journey from Southampton, England, to New York, America. They put out the fire, but it weakened the hull. “The fire was known about, but it was played down. She should never have been put to sea.” Says the journalist. That means the people knew about the fire, but didn’t make a big deal about it.

The Irish journalist who spent more than 30 years studying the Titanic argues that the fire was in a three story high bunker, a large container or compartment for storing fuel, in this case a coal bunker near one of the ships boiler rooms. (A boiler room is a compartment in a ship containing heating or steam-generating equipment).

If the fire never happened the ship would sink slower, so more people could get off in time. If the fire never happened, then the Titanic’s hull would have never been weakened so it might have never sank. There were about 1,500 deaths, and there could have been 1,000 less.

This is related to me because I have an ancestor from Southampton, who went to America.

  • A reservoir is an artificial lake where water is stored. Most of them were river built with dams to keep the water in. During droughts, or extended dry periods, the water level in a river may be very low. Under these conditions, more water is released from the reservoir so farmers can water their crops and homes and businesses can function normally.
  • The average reservoir can hold up to 550 million gallons of water
  • Ashokan reservoir at full capacity can hold 122.9 billion gallons
  • The Ashokan reservoir was placed into service in 1915
  • The Ashokan reservoir was made by damming the Esopus Creek

The two mountains by the Ashokan reservoir are Slide Mountain and  another  mountain we could not find the name of.

People said before it was build it could never hold enough water. They were Wrong.  But once it was filled from 1912-1914 they found out they were wrong.  People who lived by the ashokan reservoir were not happy about the idea.

First, the mist evaporates from water than it goes into clouds. Next the clouds rain and snow on mountains, and create streams. Those streams come together and create a river. The river would enter a reservoir. When the water is in the reservoir, it goes into aqueducts and tunnels. After three miles, the aqueducts and tunnels lead to the Kensico reservoir. In the Kensico reservoir water is treated with fluoride and UV lights. Two tunnels come out of the Kensico, there was going to be a third, but mayor De Blasio canceled the construction. The two tunnels then lead to Yonkers, where they combine into one tunnel. Next, the tunnel splits into pipes and into houses.

My Artist Statement

I would like to name this work of art self portrait line. I created this work of art by graph self portraits. Then I used different techniques to color in four of my graph self portraits. When I created my self portrait line I learned that I should take more time on projects and not just go through the hard to make projects, but to take time so it could get perfected. My favorite graph self portrait that I made was the oil pastel one. I liked it because it was fun to mix the different shades together. If I could change something about it, it would be the watercolor because the red for my mouth sped. While making it I was surprised that the colored pencil blender worked so well. Something else I want to share about this artwork is all of my drawings came out differently and I tried to hide it with the different techniques.

My Knight Monologue

“You can do this Alexander, you can do this”, I think in my head. I can get through this day. I have waited all my life for this, It was my only choice. Now I need to pray again. Here it goes, Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.  Ghegijidjfjkdl, my stomach growls.

I don’t need food, I don’t need food. Food is not my biggest worry. I wish that this day would end because I am on fast. What will happen to me when I’m a knight? Will I go out to war and never see my family again? Will I have to stay in chivalry? What will happen? “STOP WORRYING!” I yell out loud. Someone comes up to me and asks, “Is everything alright?”

“Yes I am fine,” I say back to him. I guess I’ll have to pray again. Dear father, I pray to you that you help me control my fear. I need someone to calm me down, please help me. Amen.

My coat of arms

lars-coat-of-armsMy coat of arms represents my family. It is like a family symbol. Colors have meanings like Gold: generosity and elevation of the mind. Silver or white (argent): peace and sincerity. Red: warrior or martyr; military strength and magnanimity. Blue: truth and loyalty. Green: hope, joy, and loyalty in love. Black: constancy or grief. Purple: royal majesty, sovereignty, and justice. Orange: worthy ambition. Maroon: patient in battle and yet victorious.

My Ashokan paragraph

Ashokan was occasionally entertaining because of free rec, the ropes course, and canoeing.
Ashokan was occasionally entertaining because of free rec. Free rec is a time in the day where everyone could relax or play outside. I had a fun free rec because Max and I stayed in the bunkhouse. Max had brought pokémon to Ashokan so he taught Andrei and me how to play. I found out that pokémon is a really fun game and I am happy that Max taught me. I was also very tired from the activity I just did because the activity I just did was canoeing, and canoeing was exhausting and I got very wet.  Then I relaxed on my bed until free rec ended. Another thing I did, was go to the playing field and play games. I played soccer, hot potato, and jackpot. Free rec was a fun time to play pokémon and play games and it made Ashokan entertaining.

morning news: food

Kids 11 and up should have no more than 25g of sugar a DAY, according to the American Heart Association. That means most treats like chocolate milk or ice cream should be a once a week or biweekly treat. However, natural sugar from fruit is okay.

Summer reflection

I learned this summer that before you move on to the challenge, first finish the simple. When you go on to the challenge you will be more experienced. A time I will never forget is when I saw a squirrel stretch. It rolled on its back and put out an arm, then it saw me and ran away. One time I made a bow and arrow with a clothes hanger. It turn out it didn’t work because the string I used was to small so I could’t pull it back. When I went to Martha’s Vineyard we went to the beach a lot. For a week the waves were nice and big, but one day there were also a lot of crabs, so I got pinch twice.
