China Trip Reflection

One of my favorite parts of the China trip was the school visit. It was really cool learn what school is like in different cultures. When you are on vacation with your family you don’t usually o to see other schools which made it even cooler. Another thing that was really cool to see was the great wall because thing like it doesn’t really exist in the US because we were created as a country later on and therefore don’t have as many ancient structures. In also the Idea that they build it all by manpower without the help of machines. They had to move all the supplies to the top of the mountain and them build the wall.

Mandarin Video

For the madarin project in the first quarter my goup made a video/skit all about the dragon boat festival. I think that my group didn’t do the best job on this project but I think that it was also the very first project of that size that we had had that year so I think I will be able to do better in the future. I also think there were some technical dificulties with the filming and editing that won’t happen in the future.

Mandarin Q3

This year for our Lunar New Year project we performed a set of tai chi moves for all the families  of Mandarin students. This was a new experience because we really got to be part of the culture. From my past experience I find that if you want to learn a language it helps to be part of the culture. To perform this we had to memorize all the moves and then sync that information to the music that was playing. My favorite tai chi move was the move where we would slide from one side to another: the reason I liked this was because it felt very graceful. Click Here To See Photos.

Another project that we worked on this year was our description project. In this project we had to choose someone from the LREI community and describe them in Mandarin using the describing words that we had been learning for the three to four weeks prior. The only notes that we were allowed to have with us were the sentences, but even they were entirely written in characters and we could not have any pinyin. one word that I really like is “Juǎn fǎ” Characters: 卷发. I like it because it looks like it sounds. Sorry I don’t have any photos. 🙁

Some other things that we have done this year were: we learned the words for different countries, we learned the words for different colors, we learned about words to use in class (some phrases too), and many other words and phrases! We have started this quarter with a unit on food words which I have been looking forward to for a while.

Another thing that we did in class was that we made a dialogue andd memorized it. this is me and Wyatts:

Wyatt- 你是哪国人?
Gus- 我是爱尔兰人。你也是美国人
Wyatt- 不是,我是匈牙利人。
Gus – 你会说中文吗?
Wyatt – 对,我会说一点中文,也会说英文。
Gus – 和我一样

3rd Quarter Mandarin

This quarter in mandarin we have worked on a lot of things. First of all we have been learning about simple sentences and school surplice, we also learned about the chines new year. Last of all we learned calligraphy. One of the thing that I found most interesting was the chines new year because we learned a lot about a culture that I never new that much about. The thing that I found second most interesting was the school supplies, because that is something I would not have thought about learning.
