Summer Post #3

While I was in Wyoming I watched the stars a lot. I saw my first shooting star, Also because we were so far away from cities the stars were really clear.

While I was on fishers island I watched the stars through a very old and large telescope. ( The one in the photo below ) I could see distant stars unseeable from the naked eye.

This july there was a blue moon. A blue moon is when there are 2 full moons in one month. both of the full moons looked amazing.

summer post #2

While I was at the beach, I learned how to sail. We sailed 420s out into the Long Island Sound. 420s are very small boats; they take two people to sail them. I worked the jib and balanced the boat.

We sailed in the Long Island Sound around Fishers Island, near Flat Hammock (a sand bar) and The Dumplings.

Fishers Island is a place where I feel at home and calm because there is not the feeling of everybody being rushed, there is also not a lot of noise that I am trying to not think about. Some times you hear the ferry and the other boats, but you don’t feel disturbed by that; it is more calming.

summer

While I was at this ranch I learned a lot of thingsbut one thing that stood out to me was the envoronment and what was happening at the time. Though you can’t see it at this time in the week there where forast fires about 300 miles away and later in the week the smoke drifted into the air. (The suff in the air in this photo is mist.)IMG_4071

Another thing that I learned was how to navigate a map on horse back, and how to open gates without dismounting.

One more thing that I learned was how to shoot trap. When you go trap shooting for the first time you get a quick lesson on gun safety and rules of the trap range. They also teach you how the gun works and alot of other things.Screen Shot 2014-09-23 at 12.29.52 PM

Making My Website

Making a website is fun but tiring. It took me about 3-4 weeks to make mine. If you look at my site you will think that it looks easy but if you were to try and understand out the coding you would probably get stuck. But it was definitely worth it. I learned a lot about coding.

3rd Quarter Mandarin

This quarter in mandarin we have worked on a lot of things. First of all we have been learning about simple sentences and school surplice, we also learned about the chines new year. Last of all we learned calligraphy. One of the thing that I found most interesting was the chines new year because we learned a lot about a culture that I never new that much about. The thing that I found second most interesting was the school supplies, because that is something I would not have thought about learning.

No One For Mitt

No One For Mitt

By William A. Dotson

When I was in 3rd grade there was an election for president. In the election the final candidates were Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. In my family we are almost all Democratic. That does not mean I would not have voted for Abe Lincoln. It Just means that now-a-days my family prefers Democrats.

Before the election I heard that Mitt had tied his dog’s crate to the roof of his family’s car. When I heard this I thought to myself, “WOW! That guy is a maniac!” And after that I just kept hearing crazy stories that kept making me think, “WOW! This guy’s is a Maniac!!” Then soon I heard a Rumour that he was going to not let girls go to school. Of course this was not true, but at the time I believed the rumour. On election day I walked up to my dad and said, “Did you know that Mitt Romney is a maniac?” When I said this, My dad said, “Gus, you should not say that out loud, but I partly agree.”

In the election, Obama won. In my mind I thought, “no surprise there!?” now I have little more extra information and rumours like that don’t fool me any more.

My Personal Narrative

Don’t Rock My Boat

By Gus Dotson

It was a late summer day and my family was on the beach. We were paddle boarding and swimming. I was coming out of the water, when my Dad asked me if I wanted to use the canoe. I said, “Sure!” over the sound of water sloshing against our dock and the sailboat moored farther out.

Our family had been talking about using the canoe but we hadn’t gotten around to it. So, we decided that it was the perfect day. First we pulled out the canoe, then we got some oars. Finally, we put the canoe in the water. I was the first to use it so I got in and paddled out. As I paddled, I remembered when my friends and I would go canoeing in the Great Swamp in Westchester. The Swamp is in a nature preserve that is home to many species of turtles, birds and other living things. We used to go there with my mom and some of the guides she worked with at the Nature Conservancy. We would take friends and go out to see the wildlife.

Then all of a sudden I snapped back because a wave shook my canoe. I almost fell, but I caught myself. The water was fairly calm and there was a small breeze. I was excited and nervous. As I kept paddling, I thought I might flip at any moment. But after a minute I got the hang of paddling. So I picked up my brother and sister and we all went out together. At first we stayed close to the dock, but after a little while we started to go out farther and farther. The farthest we got was a quarter of the way to the East Dumpling.

The Dumplings are two small islands out in the harbor; there is an East Dumpling and a West Dumpling. This spring I hope to paddle all the way to the East Dumpling. The East Dumpling is an uninhabited island that has very good fishing areas around it. A lot of people like to have picnics on it. Also there are a few birds that live in it.
