I learned many things this summer, ranging from chants and songs to how to properly sew a wallet. The place I learned the most was at camp. I shared a cabin with two of my school friends and seven other girls. We immediately connected as we all had similar sense of humor but different personalities. We spent a lot of our time working on drama skits, arts & craft, horseback riding and riflery. One of the challenges I overcame was to perform in front of the entire Middler Village. Although my cabin mates were all nervous at first, we managed to focus on the performance, which was a lip sync to the song “Fireworks” by Katy Perry. Even though we only practiced this performance an hour before the we went on stage, we were proud to have done our best.
This was the first sleep away camp experience. Initially I was opposed to doing this idea of going away. When I agreed to go away, I immediately regretted it until I arrived and met my cabin mates. I had so much fun that the day I was scheduled to leave camp I woke up thinking I had classes. As I said my goodbyes I realized that this was the best experience so far in my life, not to mention the friendships with campers and counselors.
When I arrived home from camp my parents informed I that I was scheduled to attend Tae Kwon Do camp. In Tae Kwon Do camp I trained for 3 hours from 9:00 Am to 12:00 Pm Monday thru Thursday with additional evening classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 2 hours. There were days when I would come home and sleep on the couch because I was to tired to go to my room to rest and sleep. These extra tae kwon do classes were in preparation for my orange with a green stripe belt. I am no where near getting my black belt and finishing, but I am one step closer. The highlight of my testing was breaking two thick wood boards with a back kick and breaking two regular wood boards with a palm heel strike.
My favorite day camp is the Greenwich House Arts Camp. There I met one of my best friends and a counselor, who shares my interests in Anime books and drawings. Everyone at the camp can always be found in high spirits and fun to hang out with. While at this camp I took classes that I don’t always get to fit into my schedule during the school year. I always look forward to my pottery class and seeing the same pottery instructor. My favorite part of this camp is participating in an activity where we are challenged to build a the tallest structure possible only using marshmallows and raw spaghetti. Every year I look forward to this activity as we are required to work in teams and show support to our camp group.
Lastly, my summer ended with being forced to take part in my sister’s college tour. Although I expected the trips and tour to be boring with talks about colleges other boring subjects, I was surprisingly interested during some of the tours and found that I enjoyed learning about the school’s history and campus life. I have to say my favorite schools were Wellesley College, Brown University and Amherst College. These visits got me thinking about colleges, the fun part of visiting, and all the hardwork that goes into qualifying for some of the colleges.
This summer was Awesome and full of learning. I had a great time and I hope that my upcoming summers are like this.
I love that you said that you were forced to go to your sister tour and then you liked it. Send lots of love to your sister for me. I thought this was very well crafted.
I like how your work is very detailed and thoughtful. I was very excited to read this and it caught my attention.
I can relate because I go to sleep away camp and my first year I felt the same way. And the way you discribed it was perfect.
I really like how you wrote a lot of details about each camp you did. I think it’s so cool that you went to Tae Kwon Do camp, even if you don’t have a black belt yet!
Wow, so much fun! Did you know the Katy Perry song before you rehearsed? I’m guessing probably yes.
