My Map Art

Oliver Map Project 3This is the final draft of the map art that I have been working on in art. I made a post about it in the past and I have to say I am impressed with myself. I went beyond my own expectations. I am going to print it out on a big piece of paper since when I printed it out on the small one with the lab printer it got the colors wrong. I took out the 3d text since it didn’t make sense with my project. I decided to name my piece Tough Love. Since I love the city because of its faults. It is a confusing concept, but it means something to me. Today in art we shared our final work with the grade in a similar fashion as the first time. I wish that more people gave me feedback because I felt that the feedback that I got was repetitive, but helpful. Most of the comments said that the colors were dull in the print. I acknowledged this and didn’t do anything about it because the print that I displayed was not the final print. A few of the other ones were just complaints that they didn’t understand. And that is okay, but I am not going to change my piece based on their understanding of my artwork. All in all this was a really fun project and I am looking forward to doing more art projects like this in the future.

Interconnectedness Of Human Body Systems

IMG_20160524_103743808 IMG_20160524_103753104

In science today we had a quiz where we had to make a bubble map of the different human body systems and show how they connect. I feel that after doing this activity I have a deeper understanding of the connective qualities of the systems. I think that I did well on the quiz. I met the requirements, which is two arrows per system, and I went above and beyond with another separate project that I decided to do since I was finished with my first. I was trying to come up with something to do and then BAM! I decided to create a human diagram of the circulatory system, since I found that that system was the most connective and interesting. I explained why arteries are red and veins are blue, and I had fun with it. I thought that this quiz in general was just entertaining for me and I would definitely do it again if I had the chance.

Shabanu News

Recently in humanities we read a book about a 12 year old girl that lives in Pakistan. Her name is Shabanu. My group created a radio show about the culture of the book.

Here is the script.

Oliver: Hello There!

Marlowe: Welcome back to

Me and Oliver: Culture in Pakistan (Marlowe on aqwertyon)

Marlowe: Today we have a special guest

Oliver: Her name is Phulan!

Marlowe and Olivia: She lives in Pakistan (Marlowe on aqwertyon)

Oliver: Okay let’s settle down now,

Marlowe: We will be interviewing her about her experiences about culture in Pakistan.

Oliver: Let’s get started!

Marlowe: Since you live in the desert, what does your home look like?

Olivia: I live in a mud hut, with my whole family. My sister, Dadi, Mama, and Auntie.

Oliver: What kinds of food do you eat in Pakistan?

Olivia: The main food that I eat is chapati, it is a flat bread similar to naan and it goes well with tea. There are many other foods that we like to eat like BEE REE YAH NEE biriyani it is also a popular dish in Pakistan, there is also THE REE REE thariri which is the vegetarian form of Biryani. To make Biriyani you need basmati rice, chicken, fried onions, chopped mint leaves, sunflower oil, and strands of saffron soaked in hot milk.

Marlowe: Is this common in your culture?

Olivia: Yes, Women normally make the meals in our household and in many other households too.

Oliver: What about fashion and what do you normally wear?

Olivia: We have chadors covering our face, but we also have shatooshes and shawls

Marlowe: Where can you buy these things?

Olivia: You can buy shatooshes on the streets of Pakistan, there are lots of stores and stands. 4

Now here is our article that we wrote in order to compliment the project.

Culture In Pakistan

By Marlowe, Oliver, and Olivia

Pakistan is a hotspot for culture. Visiting, you have chances to try new food, go to shops, buy clothes, and do many other things. If you are visiting make sure you bring Pakistani rupees because that is the common currency.  A dollar can be traded in for 164.69 rupees.

Above is a chapti. Chapati  is a common food in Pakistan. It is a flat bread similar to naan. It is a very simple recipe and it is very delicious. All you need is whole wheat flour, oil, water, and salt. But if you don’t want to make it, go to Pakistan and get it there! While you are there be sure to visit the shops, with clothes, and foods. You can find these at almost any street. Pakistan is drenched with culture!

Biryani is also a popular dish in Pakistan, there is also thariri which is the vegetarian form of Biryani. To make it you need basmati rice, chicken, fried onions, chopped mint leaves, sunflower oil, and strands of saffron soaked in hot milk.

Pakistan has a good sense for fashion too. Some common clothes you might find are, shatooshes which are made of fine underfur of the tibetan antelope. Shatooshes are very luxurious.

“I walk through the shop, looking at the woolen shawls stacked neatly, the soft colors mixed together like in and pull a woolen shawl from the pile.” Pg. 71 of Shabanu.

Shatooshes are extremely expensive. Some can be up to 15,000 dollars which is about 1,570,425 Pakistani rupees. This may be caused by the rarity of Tibetan Antelopes.
Pakistan is packed full of culture, so if you ever go there you should try their food, fashion, and be one with the culture.

This project was really fun and I really enjoyed it!

Here is the radio show!

Art – Map Project

For my map art piece I chose to make it digital. I had a bunch of ideas on what to do and I couldn’t decide on one, so I just decide to put them all side by side! I am not up to that part yet though. I just finished creating my 3d text piece. Anyway, the way I will put them next to each other is by fourths. I will cut the final work into four pieces. The first thing I worked on was my blur piece. At least, that’s what I call it. The subject of the piece is a focused in on area, which is my home, that is full of light and has a cartoon house on it. The area there is colored green, which is my favorite color. The background is colored brown, which is my least favorite color. The piece with my face on it is a regular map mixed in with my face. I did this because I feel like I know the city well and that I can relate to it. My third piece has green text (which again, is my favorite color) with a blurred out background of the city. I chose to make the text 3d because I think that the city stands out  from the rest in the world. I also made the text really big and bright because the city also has those characteristics. That is where I am at right now. I am not sure what I am going to do for my final piece but I really want it to stand out from the rest. That is where I am at with my map art project right now.

Shabanu Blog Post: What To Wear To Your Sister’s Wedding

My sister’s wedding is coming up and I am trying to come up with what to wear. I am thinking about asking Dadi to buy me this embroidered silver shahtoosh I saw at the market. It is very beautiful. After all, he did sell Guluband yesterday. In my opinion Guluband is worth a thousand shahtooshes. If he refuses to buy me that I will either ask Mama to make me something pretty or I will wear my regular black chador. I may even try to make my own outfit. I am very happy for my sister and I want to look good for her. I better make my clothes look professional. Oh, how I can’t wait for the henna ceremony. Her skin will look even more beautiful with turmeric rubbed in. I will miss her when she moves in with Hamir. My clothes will look spot on so that she will see how happy I am for her. If I find sewing my outfit is too hard, I will ask Dadi to take me back to the market where I saw the shahtoosh in the first place. Maybe I will be able to find a cheaper alternative… Yes! I will do just that! Right after I am done writing this I will ask him to take me to the market to find the perfect outfit for Phulan’s wedding! This is a general idea of what I will want to wear.

Isn’t it lovely? I hope Phulan and Hamir live happily together and have a bunch of sons.

This is me.

Shabanu Blog Post: How To Make Chapatis By Shabanu

In case you do not know, chapatis is a flatbread that’s recipe has been passed down throughout generations of my family. Here is my family recipe and I hope you enjoy.

The first thing you have to do is go out to the field and gather some wheat.

desert

After you get the wheat come back inside your hut and grind it with your hands or a stone. This will create flour.

Then what you will want to do is take your flour (preferably around two cups) and put it into a bowl.

download (2)

Next you want to take the salt and the olive oil that your dadi got from the market yesterday.

download (3)

After that you want to mix in a little salt into your flour.

Then you want to boil a pot of hot water onto the fire.

download (5)

Next you want to slowly pour in the hot water and olive oil.

Then you want to knead it with your hands to make it elastic but not sticky.

After that you want to put it on the pan in thin circles. Cook until the underside has brown spots, about 30 seconds, then flip and cook on the other side.

Now you have made chapatis! Enjoy it with your family. It is quite yummy!

My Haiku

5f3085648602f71d974a8995f5a4f97b

In Mandarin we wrote a Chinese haiku.  Well, it is actually a 五七五诗, which means five seven five poem in English. The reason it is called that is because one the first line, there is five syllables, on the second, seven, and on the third, five again. A five seven five poem is different from a haiku because a haiku is about expressing the beauty of nature, while a 五七五诗 can be about whatever you want. Here is my 五七五诗.

我会用筷子。

我的筷子是火马。

我爱是筷子。

Translated to English, it is this.

I can use chopsticks.

My chopsticks are fire horse.

I love my chopsticks.

You might be saying to yourself, “but Oliver, I counted all of the syllables in your English haiku, and it does not follow the rules of five seven five.” Well, you are wrong. That was just a translation of my 五七五诗. I don’t know if you noticed, but in the Chinese version of the poem, there is five characters on the first line, seven on the second, and five again on the third. This is because every single character in Chinese is one syllable.

You also might be wondering, “wait, what? Your chopsticks are fire horse? What the heck does that even mean?” Well, poetry is all up to interpretation, and there are no rules. I like how the characters sound in mandarin, and I think that a sense of randomness is refreshing. If you disagree, well, it is not your poem. It is mine, and it is lovely. I hope you enjoyed it.

Muscle System – Structure fits Function

Do you ever wonder how the heart does all those things fir your body? Do you ever wonder if the shape of you heart changes what it does? If your heart was shaped differently would it still do the same things or would it have different functions?

The heart is a muscle. The function of the heart is to pump blood and circulate it through the body. The structure helps the function because the heart is round so the veins that spread can go at any angle and any part of the body. Another reason is that it’s good that the heart is more at the top of your body than the bottom because it’s probably easier for blood to travel down than up. The heart is small so it is hard for it to be punctured and there are valves on the heart that make it easier to make blood flow through your body.

The heart is helpful to the brain because the brain needs a lot of blood and the heart is very close to the brain.

Illuminated Letter

IMG_1445

There is an ‘O’, shining with a pale yellow, colorful flowers entangling it. There is a blue owl, with curious eyes, perched on the inside of the ‘O’.

That is what I made. It is a European medieval illuminated letters. They decorated the cathedral windows to make up stories from the bible. each one was unique, and very pretty. The monks handmade them out of dyed glass. I chose to create an ‘O’ because my name is Oliver. I am very proud of my piece even though it was very challenging to create.

Geometric Pattern Piece

Oliver Geo 1 Oliver Geo 2

These are some photos of me doing a medieval Muslim geometric pattern piece. Medieval Muslim artwork is unique because it is very simple, yet complex. It also has no religious representation of angels, Muhammad, or God. There are also lots of geometric patterns and mosaics. That was what we were working on. Fig 1 shows me laying out the different shapes into a pattern, but when I finish,  I will completely rearrange the shapes on a separate piece of paper (Fig 2).
