Abigail Williams
“ABIGAIL: I saw Goody Sibber with the Devil”
…
“BETTY: I saw Alice Borrow with the Devil”
…
“ABIGAIL: I saw Goody Hawkins with the Devil”
BETTY: I was Goody Biber with the Devil”
Abigail Williams is hysterical. In this scene Abigail and Betty are calling out names to use as evidence for their argument. They start out by accusing people in the margins to make themselves seem more believable. When they are the most respected people in the town, they challenge the people of high authority. Abigail blames others to make her life easier. She is making the whole town hysterical, superstitious and paranoid. She is accusing other people of being a witch in order to draw attention away from her “heathen” behavior. I believe that Abigail is the real witch for ruining someone’s family for generations or sending them to hang. In the end of the play Abigail leaves Salem from her fear of being caught and fear of not having power. The shape that I chose to geometrically represent Abigail is a black angel’s wing with curved lines that represents a girl who is looked at as an angel but is really the opposite. The curved lines illustrate how she is careless. Abigail is a person who hides her faults and flaws but John Proctor does the opposite.
John Proctor
Proctor to Mary Warren
“Proctor: My wife will never die for me.”
Proctor represents redemption. He had an affair with Abigail Williams and he is trying to redeem himself from such a low point in his life. He was an adulterer and he gave into temptation. In the end he redeems himself by saving his “name”, one of the most important things of that time, so he gives his life and hangs for being a witch. In these and many other scenes John Proctor tries to prove himself to Elizabeth and God. John Proctor brings in Mary Warren to save his wife from being hanged. He screams at Mary to tell the court and Deputy Governor Danforth that the Williams girl is faking, lying and that the devil has not cursed this town. Mary tries to stop because she knew that Abigail would come at her with a pointy reckoning. In order to save herself Mary Warren accuses Proctor. That’s why he hung. I chose to represent John Proctor as a white demon’s horn. Its a demon’s horn because he is perceived to be a sinful person. The horn is white because his intentions are true and he is trying to redeem himself.
Mary Warren
Mary to Proctor about abigail
“ MARY: She’ll kill me for sayin’ that!”
Mary Warren represents sucumbing to the people in power. She is the housemaid for John and Elizabeth Proctor. In this scene John Proctor is trying to get Mary Warren to testify that Abigail is lying. She is scared to do it because earlier in the play Abigail told the girls, “Let either of you breath a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you.” Abigail was going to kill people if they called her a liar. After Mary Warren testified, Abigail and the girls were saying that Mary Warren was sending an evil bird after them. Then as everyone in the play does, she scapegoated and accused John Proctor of being a witch. I chose a three dimensional shape to represent Mary Warren. It is torn on the ends and ripped up. Half of it is black and half is white to show that she has the potential to be either good or bad. will she take the side of Proctor or Abigail? Will she be truthful or a liar?
Elizabeth
“ELIZABETH: I do not judge you. The magistrate sits in your heart that judges you, I never thought you but a good man, John only somewhat bewildered.”
Elizabeth is honest and accepting. This quote shows how she is accepting because she forgives her husband, John Proctor, for the horrible things that he has done. She is honest up until the end where she says that her husband did not have an affair after John admitted to it. In that scene we see the morals of Elizabeth being broken to save someone she cares about. The theme of honesty plays a big role in the story because everyone defies it and sometimes it can actually be safer to be dishonest. In the play after people are accused of witchcraft they have an option to be honest, not confess and hang or to live and have a “spoiled” name. This system discourages people from being honest because religious beliefs have clouded everyone’s judgments. I chose to represent Elisabeth as a ripped up heart. It was ripped up by Abigail and then was pasted together again by John Proctor. The two antennas represent how she is alien to the idea of lying and to accusing people of being a witch.
I chose to represent each character this way because they all connect in different ways. In my animation John Proctor’s horn is pointing trying to turn away from abigail wing going into him. In between the two is Elizabeth with her antennas spinning. Then below all of them is Mary Warren who is going up and down to show her indecision. In the part where Proctor is slowly moving it shows his long struggle to win back Elizabeth’s trust. The way these four characters intertwine and make decisions impact each other in an intricate and delicate manner.
