Max Scherr Garment Creation Study Project Proposal

I am attending college next year as a fashion major, my want for more technical skill and actualizing ideas is what led to this project. Fashion is a passion of mine and I am excited to be able to devote more time to it.  I have always been drawn to fashion and have spent countless hours learning as much as I can about it. I have developed a keen interest in menswear and have spent a significant amount of time researching and learning about the history of men’s fashion. I try to delve into the nicher areas of menswear, which in turn takes more time. Through this I have discovered many designers that I love such as Carol Christian Poell, Maurizio Altieri, Simon Checchetto and Taichi Murakami. I think this gives me a unique perspective on menswear and fashion as a whole.

I will keep a daily schedule to stay on track, I will measure my success by how many pieces I make in a week. However I also want to do quality over quantity so if a piece is taking longer than a week I won’t rush it. Of course it will vary depending on what type of garment I’m making but success will be fairly easy to measure because I’m creating a physical object.

The kind of clothing I want to make will all be with high quality materials. I want to try to use experimental techniques on most of the pieces. For example, I recently purchased a bunch of natural dyes. These include things like walnut hulls and henna powder. I think using those techniques to dye my fabric will make the clothing stand out. I also want to make sure I don’t get too experimental to the point where I’m learning less technically. I will start off the project by just making a simple pair of jeans to get myself warmed up and practice.

I hope to learn better technical skills through this project. I want to be confident in my technical skills before I attend college as a fashion major at Pratt in the fall.  I also am going to use a resource that Frank helped me get. I will be going to a tailor who will show me how to construct something if I need help. I also would like to borrow a camera from the school so I can take pictures of my clothing as well as the process. I’d have a couple of friends model for me. I’d like to find a cool location to show off the clothing on models and create a kind of editorial. I haven’t found a location yet, but throughout my project I will be looking for one.

Because I have already chosen who will be modeling the clothes I will be creating patterns based on their measurements. By tailoring the clothes to fit the model perfectly I think it will make for a better result. I don’t think taking a seminar is necessary in my case because I have enough resources and decent technical skills anyway. My service will be volunteering at a food shelter. I am going to do it separately from the school and the place will be close to my home.
