Senior Project 2023

My name Is Dash Rabhan and I am passionate about the music business as well as art and design. When interning for Jay Z at Roc Nation I knew I had become passionate about the business and wanted to work in it. I was inspired by Susan Now’s photography class when we made photography books and I was introduced to Bookwright. It is a program where you can make books and create and design whatever you like. I applied to all music schools that focus on publishing and licensing as well as management and journalism. This project taps into all of my passions which is why I am so excited. I look forward to writing about things that I love and then getting to form a magazine styled book that has visuals as well. This connects journalism and music together into one place which gives me creative freedom. Hopefully this will help prepare me for working at a publication in the future. 

 

For my final project I will create a coffee table book or magazine exploring various aspects of the music industry. I plan to showcase the legendary artists that have come before my time and as well as present day. Not only do I want to highlight the artists, I want to highlight the behind the scenes people: the agents, the managers. I will analyze trends and changes of the industry. To accomplish this project I plan to conduct interviews that I have already begun to line up and also read countless articles a day. I will be incorporating past and present so some days I will be looking through the Rolling Stone archives and other days I will be interpreting the data charts at Billboard. These articles will explore disruption, social media, and how the media has affected the industry as a whole. 

 

My passion for this senior project stems from growing up in a household that always incorporated the music industry. I want to do something similar as an occupation after college. This is the perfect output for my passion as rarely do I get to add creativity to my very individualized passion. Getting to write, interview and design the book shows me other aspects of the industry that I would never have the chance to do. Working at Rolling Stone has been a long time dream of mine so studying, speaking and understanding it along with its influential history will only benefit the project and me in the future. I love music for various reasons. A. It’s all I’ve ever known as my parents’ jobs . I have been submerged for such a young age. Another contributing factor is my love for making, listening and critiquing music. 

 

Besides rearching and assembling my book I will be  helping a company and doing a beach clean up with friends and other highschoolers around the city. Our beaches, especially in New York, are extremely polluted and helping is a lifelong passion of mine. Success will be measured by the interviews and writing that I have completed by the end of each week. Evaluating my interviews and the quality of my articles will all contribute to my account of where I am in the project. I will have readers like  This project will provide an overall and one-of-a-kind perspective of the music business. Through my creativity, my writing, and interviews I know I will be inspired and hope to inspire others. I look forward to working on something I have always been passionate about.
