As I have worked at Premier Studios more and more, I have realized that I am not working under the usual conditions of a recording studio, or at least for recording studios at the same level as mine. See, I think I joined this studio during its dying days. In the past recording studios charged based on the quality of their equipment, and artists paid for the level of mix they wanted. However, primarily due to covid, smaller artists do not want to go to studios as much. This puts Premier in a really weird position because it is too expensive for smaller artists to want to record there, but also does not have a solidified enough reputation for super mainstream artists. This has left Premier’s main audience being artists in between that, artists that have been in their career for a while and know what recording equipment they need but aren’t super big yet. The issue is that a lot of these artists invested in home studios over covid, and have completely cut the need for a studio. Premier’s target audience is the audience that is smart enough to not go to recording studios.
So the question is: how does a studio like Premier survive? Do they drop their prices, despite having very high-quality studios? Or do they push further, and try to match the level of the competitors just above them? Well, sadly it seems that neither strategy is being used, which is why I have changed my goals for this project.
It seems that within the next couple of months, Premier studios will not exist anymore. It will probably end up being sold to a recording label to be turned into studios for its artists. This means that all staff, including me, probably will not continue their career through Premier. This is why I have changed my goals from building up through Premier to simply learning as much as possible and meeting as many new people as possible. This way I set up the best for my future after my senior project and onwards. I already have been talking to one of my managers about possible positions at other studios, those of which are doing way better than Premier at the moment. I am going to pursue this along with many other smaller opportunities that people around the studio have mentioned. I’m just going to put my head down and work through each and every opportunity I can find, even if it becomes a bit too much at times. Even though I joined a studio in its dying days, I will not let my aspirations die with it.
