Blog Post #2 Miles Friedman

So far I feel like my project has gone relatively similar to what I planned it to be. What I wanted from my project was to be able to go to places that I would have never found myself in without this project and understand the culture that is there. I feel that so far at least I have been able to accomplish that. In one week I was able to travel to Jackson heights and get Tibetan Food then I went to Astoria and get Greek food and then I went to Flushing and got some of the best Dim Sum I have ever had all in one week. Being able to be in New York and in one week try three different types of food that are all very very different has made me realize that this project is really only possible in New York and going to Queens last week really made me realize that.

The one switch I made to my project which I am very happy with is that originally I was going to go to different places randomly and now I am doing each week by borough which I think adds a lot more to my project. By going to one borough a week I have been able to see the contrast in each borough which I think is something I would be missing if I randomly went to places. Also organizing it like this has helped me plan each week and what I plan to do. So far I have been to Manhattan and Queens and this week I plan to visit Brooklyn.

One specific thing that happened during my project that I really enjoyed was when I went to Chinatown in Manhattan and Chinatown in Flushing. For one I had never been to Chinatown in Flushing and didn’t know what to expect. I was a little worried because I had already gone to Chinatown in Manhattan and was worried that it was going to be repetitive to go to Flushing but this was not the case at all. Flushing in Chinatown could not have been more different than in Manhattan it felt like a city that I never knew existed that was still in New York. Without this project, I think the chances of me going to a place like this were very slim which would result in me missing out on a major part of New York but because of this project that’s not the case.

Because my project has allowed me to visit places that I don’t think I would find myself visiting I think it so far has been a great experience. I am able to visit places through the lens of food which only makes this project more enjoyable. I haven’t had one meal that I regret having and having these meals has helped me understand the different cultures and places located in New York.
