F, That’s Delicious follows Action Bronson as he travels around the world, visits various restaurants, and eats everything from street food to fine cuisine. The series regularly features Bronson’s friends and fellow rappers, Meyhem Lauren, Alchemist, and Big Body Bes, as well as numerous world-renowned chefs.
Although Action Bronson is a rapper he also was a cook before he started rapping which gives him major credibility in the space. Bronson was also born and raised in New York and in this episode, he focuses on small relatively unknown places. This connects perfectly with my project because in the show they are looking for a small unknown community-based food stop that means something to the community and reflects the culture of the area. These are all things I am looking for when I plan to visit the places I go to. I want to be able to go to restaurants that reflect the history and culture of where I am.

Anthony Bourdain is maybe the most famous food writer slash personality. I think that my project is heavily influenced by what he did with his show “Parts Unknown.” In his show instead of just going to the most basic places, he digs deep and finds the unknown places that truly represent the people that live in the community. This is almost exactly what my project is about and watching these episodes help me find the spots I am looking for and also how to go about myself and approach going to each place. What also makes this episode so interesting is the connection Bourdain has with the places he is going to. Bourdain has a sentimental connection to the restaurants and vendors he grew up on. “This is a show about a very special place, a special time, and some very special people,” Bourdain says in the intro. “So much happened, so much began on New York’s Lower East Side.”
- Sietsema, Robert. New York in a Dozen Dishes. United States, HarperCollins, 2015.
In this book, Robert Siestema looks at new york food culture and how it was created and some of the essential spots while also looking at some smaller obscure restaurants. What is different about this book from some of the other resources on this page is that he looks more at local dishes in New York not necessarily the restaurants. This is also very helpful and interesting for my project because it allows me to learn about the local foods I should be looking for and trying. Basically, this book gives me some information about what is should be ordering.
Robert Sietsema is a very qualified writer. Sietsema is an American restaurant critic. He wrote reviews and articles for the Village Voice from 1993 to 2013. He has also contributed to Gourmet.
- Yalof, Ina. Food and the City: New York’s Professional Chefs, Restaurateurs, Line Cooks, Street Vendors, and Purveyors Talk About What They Do and Why They Do It. United States, Penguin Publishing Group, 2019.
This book is told through the voices of all the people that work and run the food industry. I think this is the perfect book for my project because it gives you perspective from every aspect of people in the industry and what goes on behind the scenes. While much of my work will be focused on the food that is coming out of the kitchen it is also very important to know what is going on behind the counter. This book is described as, “An unprecedented behind-the-scenes tour of New York City’s dynamic food culture, as told through the voices of the chefs, line cooks, restaurateurs, waiters, and street vendors who have made this industry their lives.”
- “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown – The Bronx.” YouTube, YouTube, 6 Oct. 2014, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4J6mY1LQCuk. Accessed 28 Mar. 2022.
While this episode is very similar to the first episode I cited the one main difference is that this episode takes place in the Bronx and explores the local food in the Bronx. Bourdain experiences the Bronx through the people that are from there and that know the type of food and have connections with the food. This adds another layer that I am hoping to discover in my own project. Specifically, Bourdain tours the Bronx with, Afrika Bambaataa, Mellle Mel, and Baron Ambrosia who help guide the host through the music, food, art, and other offerings of this often misunderstood part of the city.
