While it has only been one week of going around to different restaurants and writing about them I feel like I have gained a lot of knowledge and information about New York as a whole and even the rest of the country. In the first week of my senior project, I was only in the city for two and a half days because I had to travel to Georgia. I originally thought I was not going to be able to do any work while I was in Georgia for the obvious reason that my project is based on foods in New York. This ended up not being the case. While I wasn’t able to go to any restaurants that fit the build of my project I was able to realize that New York is one of the very few places in this country let alone the world where my project is possible. Even from the first three restaurants, I have realized that New York is a boiling pot of culture and that anywhere you turn there can be different cuisine belonging to a different culture. This was certainly not the case in Athens, Georgia and I would imagine not many other places.
Although I was in Georgia for half the first week I was still able to go to three different restaurants at the time of this blog post. I have been to Veselka, a Ukrainian restaurant, Mee Sum Cafe, a Chinese restaurant/cafe, and the Halal Guys, a food cart in midtown serving Halal food. Going to three completely different places all in one week all located in Manhattan has been exactly what I wanted out of this project. I wanted to one day eat food that originally comes from China and the next day be eating food that comes from Eastern Europe I feel that even in the first week I have accomplished that.
Another aspect of my project that has been interesting for me is the writing aspect of it. Writing a preview and review blog of each place has made each outing feel like a full arc. I’m not just going to place eating there and leaving with nothing else attached. Having the writing aspect has so far made going to each place more meaningful which I didn’t necessarily see being the case before the project started.
Going forward with my project I am now even more excited to start going to places a little farther away. The way I decided to organize where I go in a week is by doing three restaurants in one borough for every week. Although I have only done Manhattan so far I expect my project to also be a great way to see the city. Because of my project, I am going to be going to places that I would never have thought about going to.
Although I feel that my project has been a great experience in this short period of time, the one thing I have had to adjust to is working on my own schedule and being accountable for myself, and doing the necessary things. This definitely was a bit of a struggle for me in the first few days and still is sometimes but I feel that even in this first week I am getting better at managing my own time.
