Eli Harris Blog Post #1

After a week and a half of my senior project, I have learned many things. All in all I have really enjoyed the first part of this project. I have been on a multitude of bike rides within the last week and a half that have taken me across a lot of the city. The first thing I have learned is that a self made project is a really intense thing to do. Everything that I am doing is self planned and therefore there is a lot of pressure in everything that I am doing. I never want to procrastinate because I feel as though I am letting myself down on my plan. I have been able to stay really up to date on my plan and that has felt really nice and encouraging for myself.

My favorite ride I have done so far has been biking to Coney Island and back. This ride granted me a perfect opportunity to see the city and all it has to offer in regards to bike lanes and riding bikes in general. I thought the wide range of different bike lanes along this route was really cool to see. This route goes through a bunch of different neighborhoods and I feel as though it would not have been the same experience having been in a car. This ride also happens to be very interesting because mileage wise it is not particularly far, however, it takes a very long time because a majority of it takes place on local roads.

My least favorite ride I have done has been when I rode up to the LightHouse at the George Washignton Bridge and back home. Although there was an established bike lane the entire time. It felt like the lanes were not being used and something just felt very off. I felt surrounded by cars the entire time and alone in my use of my bicycle. I did not know how to feel in regards to this. All in all there was not much differential between any parts of this ride and it made for a very uninteresting ride in the end.

In conclusion, the last week and a half have been a really enjoyable experience. I have been on a lot of really enjoyable rides and been able to see the city from a really cool and interesting perspective that one most likely would not see on foot or in a car. I am really happy with where my project is going. I feel as though I am gaining a lot of fascinating knowledge on the impact that my biking is having on the environment around me through biking these different routes every day. I am tremendously looking forward to what the rest of my project will both teach me and bring to me. My goal for the next few weeks is to better document my daily endevours better in a visual manner. There are a lot of cool things that I am doing and I want to make sure to capture that in the best way possible.
