I am interning at Koko’s Architecture + Design as planned. Part of my independent project has shifted. First, I will discuss how it has shifted. Initially, I had plans to focus my independent project on architecture and digital modeling. I was going to make a virtual model of an ice cream shop using Rhino 3D. While this was my original idea curated alongside Mishi and Adam (heads of the firm), we all decided that in the time frame of about a month-and-a-half, the digital model may be a significant task to accomplish alone. It would be manageable if I were just to do the model, but it is complex to juggle because I’m going in person to the internship and working on their projects. We also decided that I could always do the project independently after learning more about design from my internship. Another reason we decided to shift my personal project is that I wanted to experiment with other forms of design besides interior design and architecture.
My new independent project to do when I’m not at the internship is to record in a journal constantly. The journal has a broad prompt: draft any designs for buildings, products, logos, or other designs that I think of and also practice sketching. On my independent time, I have consistently been going outside to museums, parks, landmarks, and walking on streets to take photos and do perspective drawing and observations (also for inspiration). Sometimes I will take a photo of a design or landscape I find interesting and later make a sketch inspired by it. I also sketch people and anything that will help me practice working on paper.
The other element of my senior project is assisting and working on the projects and assignments that the firm is doing. For my first week, I have been away touring colleges and have barely been in the city (and the firm has been very busy), so I haven’t had much in-person time yet at my internship. In this following week, I expect to be in person much more often doing design work at the firm. So in terms of the internship, I don’t have much to compare to my previous expectations.
As I mentioned before, I have been doing independent work even during my college revisits. I have been researching and going to museums. Some are: Bard College Museum, Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the art museum at Syracuse University, and the Academy Museum and a bit of the LACHMA museum in Los Angeles (Academy Museum has drawing and art exhibitions as well – i.e., the Hayao Miyazaki installation and the costumes and sketches from films). While all of the museums have related to art and design, I have also paid attention to the layout, interactive design, graphic design, and architecture of the buildings.
Here are some images of the museums and content inside:
Below images are from the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston: (I don’t have information on the people who made the objects/artwork but it can be found on this website https://www.googleadservices.com/pagead/aclk?sa=L&ai=DChcSEwjfjLGDqpT3AhVXbG8EHbmNCHUYABAAGgJqZg&ohost=www.google.com&cid=CAESbOD2q8iY445T5b4XGP6hwGGLdAF2iby1-e0tyhHcZFuunZ7H1W-ufLEjEPdg_iy-ZlJf1XWXyTZVVgZhGTINAy6p0wn9iW1ejcrS9o88dbfgaPXZ7kms6Beh0oRXFY6nrdmDyhihi2zNyl25vQ&sig=AOD64_3m74Hl6mEVS6d3IlA2nvbRdsrJLg&q&adurl&ved=2ahUKEwijqqWDqpT3AhXelmoFHe4iB8MQ0Qx6BAgDEAE).
Besides museums, I have been sketching and taking photographs of any surroundings and objects: streets, products, bridges, paintings, interesting color palettes, the interior of the colleges and houses I’ve visited, people-observing, and more.
