It’s my second week into my Senior Project, and all I can say is that I am pleasantly surprised. I initially thought I would only be working on the sustainable initiatives at my internship but I have soon realized the extent of sustainability throughout every department. I never realized the amount of units used and the impact of each style and look. I also have learned so much about the techniques of making clothing and how sustainable they are all individually.
Here are some details I learned about fabric and their correlation to sustainability. “Cut and sew” fabric is breathable and it is woven together and then cut then woven again which means there can be excess amounts of fabric which makes it not very sustainable. “Woven” fabric is very structured and not breathable, usually used to make dresses and other less breathable pieces. Knitted is the most sustainable due to the fact that it is created in the shape it is produced and there is no excess fabric.
During this week I have noticed and learned that this career path is exactly what I thought it would be, if not better than I expected. I enjoy the aspects of corporate responsibility but really have found interest in this specific kind of product. Previously to this project I thought that I didn’t care what product I was selling. I now know that I would prefer to work with apparel companies for two main reasons. One, it is constantly able to grow and change due to the way fashion lines work. Two, working around creative minds who are constantly thinking about the ways that their personal designs are affecting the world socially creates a space for genuine edits and changes within the industry.
I am slowly starting to understand my place at the office, I am easily asked to move into each department with little to no information on what I am doing. Which not only has prepared me to think on my feet, but has given me such a wider idea of this company and of the industry I am working in. I could be steaming one moment and then be shooting a sweater for their instagram the next. Or be in a meeting talking about ways we can recycle old lines and then learn how to take specs for a fitting. This type of learning I find so interesting as well as very immersive.
