Sakari Sylvester: Incentivizing A Community

For my project, I wanted to focus on something that I felt was relevant and fascinating. I have always had an unexplored interest in real estate, particularly development. In the past couple of months, I have noticed many communities undergo drastic changes partnered by gentrification and the development of properties and commercial places. I noticed the changes in communities like Bedstuy, Bushwich, East Flatbush, and East New York in Brooklyn, and more recently I have noticed the changes in my very own neighborhood of Jamaica Queens. I started observing the sudden boom in luxury apartment buildings, hotels, and the new addition of coffee shops and markets, which piqued my interest. I decided to research what caused, what I thought was a sudden change in my neighborhood. I found that these changes were not in fact sudden but had been set into motion before the pandemic; they were all a part of the revitalization plan of Jamaica Queens. In many of the neighborhoods that I have called home, I have seen them undergo vast changes in the past years. There has been a sudden increase of white-owned and operated franchises like Starbucks, which has been coined to be one of the first indicators of gentrification. They have also gone through “rezoning” which has allowed for Citi bikes and bike lanes to be added; these bikes allow for fast and easy transport through parts of Brooklyn and Manhattan. I believe gentrification is tied to young people looking for inexpensive housing options while injecting themselves into local culture and this is a topic I wish to explore in more depth through my research. I hope that with this project I will be more educated on topics around community revitalization and development. In the past, I have studied gentrification and its impacts so I am well versed in the subject, but I still have questions about rezoning and how that impacts a community. This project will prompt me to explore different neighborhoods of New York City weekly, to examine new construction, renditions, people, parks, and the general liveliness of the community. I will be looking at old New York through apps and books provided to me by Susan Now and capturing the changes/discoveries on film. I have decided that I will measure my success by my ability to present my findings during my final presentation. I want to be able to provide a cohesive and well-articulated definition of gentrification as well as be able to ground my thinking in the research that I have done. As for the film portion of my project, I measure that by my ability to develop and print my photos on time without feeling rushed. I think that it will be important to add that the organization and management of my time will be a large determinate of my success.
