Improving New York City’s Architecture

My project is about how the architecture of New York City can be changed to be better, specifically for people with disabilities. This is important because New York City is a big city with many people who travel through it each day. Navigating the city should be possible for all people despite their differences. This project will challenge me as I have never taken on something like this before. It will test my knowledge and research abilities in order to design effective solutions. I hope to learn more about what has already been done to improve the city’s architecture as well as how to be a better designer. In my freshman year when I was at Brooklyn Technical High School (BTHS), I was in a class called Design and Drafting for Production (DDP). This was a class which taught me the rules of designing and creating 3D drawings. I really enjoyed a specific project where we got to make and draw our own city. We first drew a 3D drawing of it and then converted it into a 3D model using a software program called CAD. This is where I got inspired to further my knowledge on this subject. Looking forward to a potential career, I was interested in becoming a veterinarian. However, most opportunities were for people 18 or older. As a result, I felt that I should pursue one of my other interests because there weren’t many opportunities I could do in the science category. One of my other interests was architecture and industrial design. This is when I remembered back to how much I had enjoyed my introductory design class. This project is going to take a lot of critical thinking as well as creativity. While it seems quite intimidating, I’m excited to learn through this experience. The process of my project is to follow a weekly schedule where each day I’m either doing research, going to and photographing certain areas, making a 3D drawing with improvements, or making the drawings into 3D models. My main focus is to make the architecture of certain areas in the city that are flawed better for people with disabilities or people of old age. However, based on research, I may improve architecture to do with other issues such as hostile architecture for homeless people.
