  • Cline, Elizabeth L. Overdressed the Shockingly High Cost of Cheap Fashion. Portfolio/Penguin, 2013.

Elizabeth L. Cline is a New York-based author, journalist, and advocate against fast fashion. Her book Overdressed: The Shockingly High Cost of Cheap Fashion, was one of the first pieces of media to show the impacts of fast fashion on the environment, economy, and society as a whole. Her book helped jump-start the sustainable fashion movement.

This book is about fast fashion and its costs of it. Cline goes over the overconsumption of clothing in America, the effects of fast fashion, alternatives, and more. Overdressed: The Shockingly High Cost of Cheap Fashion also is about the roots of fast fashion globally. The book gives examples of brands we know today that are very popular but shows the harm they create.

This book is a great reading that connects to my theme of sustainable fashion. It talks about the job of sewing and how it is important to the sustainable fashion movement. A large part of my project that I wanted to learn about was fast fashion and its effects of it and this book does a very good job of covering that in pretty much its entirety.

  • “The True Cost.” Cmv-Laservision, 2016.

The True Cost is a movie directed by Andrew Morgan. Andrew Morgan is a celebrated director and has done documentaries for many projects. His work has been released all over the through major streaming platforms. Morgan is an advocate for sustainability and outwardly against the control of large corporations in the world of fashion.

The True Cost is a documentary filmed all over the world that shows the effects of fashion on people, communities, and the globe as a whole. It shows the lives of the people who create our clothes, especially fast fashion clothing. The True Cost is a good way to look into the individual aspect of making clothes for a large corporation.

This movie will give me perspective on the global scale of fashion and the individuals making fast fashion products. The documentary will also show and give examples of the leading brands that contribute to the cost of fast fashion. It will be interesting for me to compare my work to those in a worse situation than me working in a factory for horrible wages. This documentary will definitely be eye-opening for me and give me more perspective on my privilege.

This article is an extensive review of how to read sewing patterns. It goes over what each symbol and line means on a pattern, the definitions of pattern pieces, cut lines, and more. It gives a step-by-step process of reading a pattern and diagrams.

Part of my project experience is learning how to sew from patterns and learning to read sewing patterns. I do own patterns at my house but definitely need help on how to read them which this article can provide and I can learn a lot from. I have never sewed from a pattern before so Eve will help with that experience.

Sewing out loud is a podcast by Zede and Mallory Donohue. Zede and Mallory create sewing media through podcasts, zine, and more. Their podcast is an extension of their website (Sewhere) which offers classes, patterns, sewing materials, and more.

Zede and Mallory host a weekly podcast called “Sewing Out Loud” where they discuss sewing techniques, pet peeves, and often feel free to compliment one another on their designs. The podcast teaches you to make clothing and discusses topics in sewing. The episodes range from how to sew with zippers, to embroidering, and more.

Sewing Out Loud will be useful for my project because it touches on mostly all components of my project. I can learn more about sewing and techniques, fast fashion, and sewing culture as a whole. A podcast is a great way for me to consume information on sewing. It will also be a good guide as I do my work because the podcast touches on everything regarding sewing.

  • Clothing, Named. Breaking The Pattern: A Modern Way To Sew by Named Patterns

Named is a fashion label created by sisters Saara and Laura Huhta. The sisters create clothing lines using sustainable materials. They also create and publish clothing patterns from their designs that people can then try themselves.

This book includes 10 contemporary pattern designs that are easy to make and step-by-step guides. This book shows the basics of sewing and garment construction. The patterns range from simple bottoms to tops.

This is a great book for my project because it works on sewing from patterns for basic designs. I need to learn how to sew from patterns in my project and this is a great beginner’s guide for that. In addition, my work so far in sewing has been male-focused clothing so learning how to make women’s clothing will definitely help me as a sewer.
