Internship at Live Nation Women and Understanding Gender Equity in the Entertainment Industry

The Live Nation Women fund is a chapter of Live Nation entertainment, a global entertainment company which “promotes, operates and manages ticket sales for Live Entertainment in the US and internationally.” Live Nation Women is powered by Live Nation Entertainment, in the company’s growing effort to promote gender equity in the live entertainment industry. Live Nation Women evaluates female founded live music business and provides access to capital for underrepresented female entrepreneurs in the Concert Promotions, Events and Festival space. I will be doing most of my work directly with the President and Chief Strategy Officer of Live Nation Women, Ali Harnell. Unfortunately, Ali is based in Nashville and frequently travels for work, so most of my work will be done virtually. Most of my work will likely be running errands virtually, taking notes in zoom meetings and doing other online work like that.
Additionally, I am going to be taking a Senior Seminar at school. I am taking the Reading The New Yorker senior seminar to fill the academic bucket of my project. I have never been an avid reader of the New Yorker but I think that this project is the best time to appreciate the city and learn more about culture in the process.
This is a project I am extremely excited to engage in as I am very interested in the entertainment industry and feminist intiatives. Ali is a trailblazing woman in the music industry and learning from her about her work, specifically through the context of gender equity, will hopefully be a life changing experience for me. I simply want to learn through experience, because while my work will be primarily administrative and remote, I think that this is the perfect opportunity and time to pursue an experiential project like this.
Some challenges I anticipate facing with this project include independence, self motivation and doing administrative work. While I have always been a somewhat independent person, I think being virtual and having the responsibility to do most of my work from a relatively removed perspective will be challenging for me. However this will be an extremely valuable skill to develop, especially as our world becomes more oriented towards virtual work. In a similar spirit, another challenge I anticipate facing is motivating myself. Sometimes it can be hard for me to remain motivated, but self motivation is a very important life skill which I know will be useful to me in both college and my career. And finally, doing more administrative work is something that I have never really had to do, and learning how to remove myself from our progressive learning environment and doing more grunt tasks in order to learn and be productive will be extremely valuable for me.
With my project I plan to fill the experiential, academic, and of course the mandatory service buckets. Despite being virtual, my internship with Live Nation Women, is a largely experiential opportunity, as working with members of the industry will allow me to learn through experience, whether that be in-person or online. I plan to fill the academic bucket through engaging in the Reading The New Yorker Senior Seminar. Finally, I will fill the service bucket by spending time separate from my internship at Live Nation Women and seminar, volunteering, potentially at God’s Love We Deliver, Bowery Mission, the Xavier Soup Kitchen ect.. I anticipate that the internship will not fill up all 25 mandatory hours each week, and I will compensate for that time with seminar work and volunteering.
By the end of my project I simply hope that I have learned. I know this seems like a somewhat simple or trivial answer, but I am going into this project with hopes of gaining experience and knowledge about the industry, Live Nation Women specifically, and gender equity. I think this project is the perfect opportunity to “dip my toe in the water” and see if I enjoy working in this industry and space. I think that the work is incredibly important and interesting, so I am bound to learn, but I also want to learn about how I fit in.
This is an incredible opportunity and I am sure that the project will be extremely fun, while also being rewarding and informative. I am extremely excited for this experience, and incredibly grateful for the opportunity!
