For my senior project, I will be doing an internship with the clothing brand, La Ligne. This brand has done multiple different projects in the past with charitable organizations and worked with upcycling lines. I will be rotating to different teams and seeing the ways they apply corporate responsibility to the decisions made in the company and through the clothing. I will then do a presentation on my findings.
I will be working on production and warehousing, content creation, social and email marketing/messaging. Research fabrications for future designs and research initiatives as well as projects to use leftover sampling and production fabrics. I will also research different ways brands can take micro and macro initiatives to be more socially responsible. Lastly, I will research socially responsible influencers for future collaborations and content creation. My essential question asks, “How are clothing companies conducting their corporate social responsibility, and how can we infuse the business with social justice.” This project is so important to me because as it stands now my job projection would be doing just this. I want to organize companies’ social responsibility departments and work on how for-profit organizations can still have service components. This will offer me the opportunity to actually watch the inside of a company with a strong social corporate responsibility program and learn how to run these initiatives. I hope to learn how to manage corporate teams and learn how to invest in a space with creatives. I also want to learn how to be a part of a real company’s team. This project fills the four buckets mentioned in the guidelines of this project. Service, corporate social responsibility is rooted in service work, and the projects I will be working on concerning Earth Day, are all doing service. Creativity, I will be working with designers on how to take the materials we use now and create more sustainable alternatives. This will take a lot of creative energy and will include helping pick fabrics and design. Community, I will get the opportunity to work at an actual company and will learn how to be a gear in a well-oiled machine. This definitely ticks the box of community. Experience, I will get to gain experience in a field dear to my heart and do work that will set me up hope for the rest of my career.
My measure of success will be my final presentation in addition to my worksheet where I will dialog what I do each day with comments on important “AHA!” moments etc. I will also measure my success by the production of this clothing line, and when my work will be posted onto the brand website. If I leave this project feeling like I not only know more about the industry but feel like I truly understand this field of work, I will deem my project a success.
