This week I also visited Hess’ Triangle and Ken Hiratsuka’s Sidewalk Carving at the northwest corner of Broadway and Prince Street.

The Hess Triangle is a triangular tile mosaic set on a sidewalk in the West Village. The mosaic says, “Property of the Hess Estate which has never been dedicated for public purposes.” The plaque was installed after an argument between the city government and the estate of David Hess, a landlord from Philadelphia.

Ken Hiratsuka’s Sidewalk Carving at the northwest corner of Broadway and Prince Street, by an artist who left his home country to escape the rigid art system of postwar Japan. He decided to chisel a design into the granite, resulting in the first work in a series of what became his signature style of stonework.
