Weekly Reflection for 5/10

This week I just thought I would give a very straightforward, barebones look at my day-to-day life onboard Intrepid and what I thought of the experience. Most days I wake up around 9 a.m. to get to the ship at 11 am. I’d make myself breakfast to get dressed and get my IDs in order and leave my house around 10:15. I would then get on a Citi Bike, usually electric unless there was some sort of issue, and ride over to the Intrepid. I usually got in sometime around 10:45 and check my daily update forward to see where I would be staffed that day. Most days I’d usually begin either on the flight deck or the hangar deck and usually, that’s a position where I wouldn’t get asked nearly as many questions and so I would go drop off my stuff and prepare to walk around and look at the exhibits myself, as I very really got questions. Usually, during the day, I would end up in one of the two Bridges, Admirals, or captains, and in those places, I would get a lot more questions as the visitors are much more directed towards the volunteers (in the oneway walkway). Usually, people would ask about facts about the ship, specific objects in the two Bridges, how many people were on board, and stuff like that and basic information that I learned within the first couple of days just watching other people answer those questions. As time went on it was very fun to watch the museum get more and more visitors and it’s been interesting to see the pandemic from an employee perspective. As an employee, I did get to see a lot more of the ship that a visitor usually wouldn’t, but a lot of it has been converted to be used as their offices, break spaces, locker rooms, Etc. So it’s a little sad to see some of that history lost but cool to see it and get a sense of what the day to day life was like (most hallways were left intact). I enjoyed my time onboard Intrepid and I hope to see some people there over the summer!
