Week 5 Experience 1

In my position at Midwood Ambulance Service, I am a COVID vaccinator, I sign up for shifts at the one (formerly two) POD at which we have a contract to supply vaccinators for with the NYC DOHMH. Once my requests are in the system that Midwood uses, they are sent to a supervisor who either approves or denies them. This is a pretty good setup, most of the time. However, when the City has an excess of positions at the POD which is the case more and more as demand for the vaccine subsidies in New York City, shifts are beginning to disappear from the schedule. Week by week the City will either give us notice or just cancel shifts that they had originally requested to be covered. This is normally not a problem for me as I am strictly a COVID vaccinator for Midwood at the moment meaning they give me preference for these particular shifts as opposed to other per diem or full-time employees who pick these shifts up in addition to normal ambulance tours. However, this week the City has greatly cut the number of shifts available to Midwood and so even though I had put in for shifts this Thursday and Friday, I was approved for neither and sent a message saying that the City had canceled all but three of these contractor shifts. This is not a huge issue for me as I always have things to put time into in EMS for continuing education, training, etc. but for someone who is relying on this as one of their main sources of income, this kind of action by the City, pulling the rug out from underneath our healthcare workers trying to make ends meet is pretty atrocious in my opinion.
