Weekly Reflection for 5/3

For this weekly blog post I thought I would write about thee USS Growler (SSG-577). The USS Growler was one of 2 submarine designed to carry the Regulus class nuclear missiles. These missiles were radio guided (basically planes) that required the submarine to surface before firing. The Regulus had a very short service life (owed to the fact that the Polaris missile was far more desirable as it could be launched from below the water. In the end the Growler only operated 8 patrol missions, with each mission lasting 2-2.5 months. Life on board the ship was uncomfortable to say the least, with loud diesel engines, roughly 100 men. No fresh air (the growler would only surface for maybe a total of 3 days on each mission) and no showers (to water intensive). The ship was then sent to reserves to be used as a practice target, but was saved by the museum. Today, a dedicated team of volunteers keep the boat sparkling clean, with 2 men (who served on similar submarines) leading the charge. It is fascinating to explore inside and I can’t even capture the respect I have for the sailors on board as the ship seems so incredibly small and inhospitable. I highly recommend you come to visit and see for yourself!
