Critical Reflection #5

Something that I have learned about my process is that I am somewhat used to having a pretty set routine, and doing what I have been doing is anything but. I don’t dislike that aspect of my project, it’s just a new challenge and learning experience that I had not anticipated. Something that I now don’t know is how EMTs and Paramedics are surviving on their salaries. Although in the US we see talking about money as somewhat of a taboo subject, with people who were comfortable (everyone I have talked to) I have discussed the state of salaries in EMS. Something I have learned about that is that the way to get someone to talk about their salary is by paying them an atrociously low wage. Unless you have roommates, live far on long island, or have a spouse that brings in another source of income, it is impossible to support yourself in New York City. This is the reason that FDNY EMS has no residency requirement whereas FDNY and NYPD and even DSNY require that their employees live in one of the five boroughs, Nassau, or Westchester counties. Although I have somewhat shifted my essential question, I keep getting closer to an answer to my original one as time draws on.
