Jack H – Critical Reflection #4

  • This is a Text investigation. Consider your essential question in the context of at least two outside sources you have identified that connect to your essential question. How do these ideas resonate with or challenge your own beliefs, experiences, or practices? Be sure to give concrete and specific examples. You may want to address: ways the sources answered parts of your Essential Question, what additional questions were raised, or how your essential understanding of your project was altered or confirmed by the readings you did. Make sure to cite your sources.

A video called Music Distribution: Then and Now! answered a major part of my essential question: How has music distribution changed? I learned from this video how digital music sales have surpassed physical sales as of 2016 and continue to grow rapidly. Rather than covering for costs such as shipping your music to stores, digital music distribution only involves “a few clicks.” It’s incredible how technology has made music distribution accessible to anyone in today’s world, having more opportunities than ever to share your music with the world in a much simpler way.

In the attached reading, I learned about the differences between digital distributors (i.e., DistroKid, Tunecore) and performing rights organizations (i.e., ASCAP, BMI). In short, it’s easy to quickly assume when distributors give you a deal to get 100% of your royalties, you still aren’t necessarily collecting everything. That’s where performing rights organizations such as ASCAP and BMI come in, and by registering your song on either of those platforms, you can collect “performance royalties.” Performance royalties collect revenue based on each instance a song is “performed,” which can mean anything from having your song played on the radio to live performances. This is not covered by distribution services such as TuneCore and DistroKid, however, registering with ASCAP or BMI will allow you to collect these royalties. I don’t necessarily need this level of coverage for this project, however, I find it interesting to learn about and I’ve learned that it is simple enough to sign up anyway that I will take this extra step.
