Caroline M – documentation post

This week I visited 4 locations, but this is the mood board I made for the first two: The Floating Subway Map in Soho and “Carrying On”, the Prince Street subway art.

The Floating Subway Map was created by Françoise Schein’s built-in stainless steel concrete and lights. This piece “expresses Schein’s understanding of the NY subway system like a flux inside a living body.”

The Prince Street subway piece, “Carrying On” by Janet Zweig, celebrates the significance and individuality of the citizens of New York. For the installation, some of the existing white subway tiles were removed and replaced with new identical tiles that had been cut out in the shape of the figures. Stainless steel, marble, and slate shapes were placed in those spaces like puzzle pieces, making it appear that the figures are embedded in the walls.
