This week I worked on directing Isabella’s monologue. The monologue we are doing is originally an essay so I had to think of creative ways to move the essay to something in person. I got a lot of great ideas from many people in the festival of plays. After thinking it over I took some of their ideas but mainly stuck with my own ideas. Usually in class, I follow the lead of others but in directing the monologue I took creative control.
This helps me answer my essential questions: How can I utilize theatre and dance to create a performance piece that explores my artistic identity? What is my artistic identity? I learned that my artistic identity depends on me and I have a lot of good ideas to offer.
My next source that helped me answer my questions was writing for the festival of plays. I usually don’t like playwriting but I decided to edit some of our pieces so I needed to come up with my own material. This helps me answer my essential questions: How can I utilize theatre and dance to create a performance piece that explores my artistic identity? What is my artistic identity? I realized that I like writing comedy. Instead of trying to make it funny by adding random jokes, (which is what I have done in the past) when I was writing I was pulling from the characters’ personalities. Each character is so absurd that it was easy to make the piece funny by making the character completely out of touch with reality instead of making jokes pulled from thin air.
Wow. This work you’re doing seems super cool. It seems like you are certainly pushing yourself out of your comfort zone in order to produce some really amazing pieces. You certainly seem to be exploring the different ways you write and shape each character within your stories. I like how you are trying to ground your comedy aspects within your characters’ personalities in order to make each piece more wholesome.
Sorry Mika – I realize I wasn’t supposed to comment on yours 😀
but keep up the good work
