Documentation week #3

4/28/21

This week I wanted to focus on studying the Unabomber case. I started by watching a documentary on Netflix called “Unabomber In his Own Words”, which I really enjoy so far because it’s engaging and entertaining. I have studied this case before but from watching some episodes of the documentary I’ve started to learn so much more beyond just the case details and more about Ted’s Kaczynski’s life. For example, how he kept a secret journal and recorded everything but used a code with numbers so at first glance no one could decipher it. I’m also learning more about his early life and starting to understand how he escalated to killing. I plan to document my understanding and research on this case through google slides to keep track of the case and as part of my final product.

For this week I’ve been studying the Unabomber case and have been putting together a slideshow about the whole case. I decided to make a slideshow because I wanted to put in pictures and I wanted it to be easier to flip through. I think that I’m going to take the beginning of next week to start wrapping up this case. It has been really interesting to not only understand the investigation from the FBI’s perspective but also understanding some of Kacynski’s psychological behavior. Studying the case for a second time, I’ve learned so much more about Kacynski like how he has paranoid schizophrenia, how he was a part of experiments in which he was subject to verbal abuse, etc. Of course, these shouldn’t be considered “excuses” but should be examined as some ways he could become capable of murder. The other half of the week I hope to start learning about the Michelle O’Keefe case. I decided to end with the Zodiac Killer because I wanted to prioritize learning about how profiling may be dangerous and it would be interesting to apply everything I know about the unsolved case.
