This is a Text investigation. Consider your essential question in the context of at least two outside sources you have identified that connect to your essential question. How do these ideas resonate with or challenge your own beliefs, experiences, or practices? Be sure to give concrete and specific examples. You may want to address: ways the sources answered parts of your Essential Question, what additional questions were raised, or how your essential understanding of your project was altered or confirmed by the readings you did. Make sure to cite your sources.
I have done a lot of textual research for my project but in terms of my essential question, two of the sources that really resonated with me are Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud, and La Perdida by Jessica Abel. Understanding Comics taught me a lot about different techniques and devices to tell your story. One of my favorite parts of the book was when he describes a variety of kinds of panels you can use to illustrate the movement of time. For example, using larger panels that take up more of a page can show a paused moment in time, whereas using a bunch of small panels can show fast motion. La Perdida by Jessica Abel was very inspiring to me because of how the author used language throughout her story. In my first comic story, many different languages are used, and at first, I thought about leaving that aspect of the story out. However, after reading this text, I think that including various languages can help to tell a story rather than hinder it. In La Perdida, the author uses both Spanish and English in her story about her main character’s experiences in Mexico. Something about having Spanish woven throughout the book makes you feel more grounded in the setting, and I believe that it adds a lot to the story.
