I met with Lisa Metcalf, owner of Ten Yards, a company which helps fashion brands with sourcing, production and logistics. She has worked in the fashion world for over 30 years and has had a multitude of experiences. We discussed the many problems with fast fashion, she told me in her experience she has seen so many problems with workers rights for the garment makers in the fast fashion industry; majority of them being sweatshops. A lot of these factories are not just in poorer countries, many of these factories with such poor treatment are in our very own country and in places like LA and NYC. A lot of large companies which use these sweatshops hire immigrants and many women of color, they work in horrible conditions and have terrible pay even though their work is something which is a valuable trait. In addition, a lot of companies use greenwashing. Greenwashing is when a company claims they are environmentally friendly or a sustainable brand but they are just doing it for marketing reasons. In order to really understand the sustainability of a brand they need to be very transparent about the processes they go through to make the clothes and where they are sourcing their fabrics, etc.. There are so many aspects to sustainability and so many problems to discuss about sustainability in the fashion world.
