I absolutely believe my Senior Project has helped me answer my essential question. Throughout this project, I have mainly attempted to understand what I can learn about a design/architecture education that will guide my future studies. Relating to what I wrote about last week, I believe that time management, along with patience and precision, are the main skills I have learned thus far. I was not quite sure what I expected to learn going into my project, but I believe this has been a wonderful and important takeaway.
I do not believe I have met many challenges besides issues of time management, which I feel that I have overcome at this point in time. This might change as the projects get more complicated and as I have to work a bit more creatively in the designs I make. I expect to be challenged on Friday as I begin translating my maquette into a 3D model on SketchUp.
I do not have many questions besides a curiosity about whether digital drafting, which I have found enjoyable so far, will become tedious and unfulfilling as my projects become more complicated. The more I have done research on architecture programs, the more I have learned that especially within the last few decades, it has become increasingly important to be able to work on projects digitally–something I have not been able to do much. I believe my SketchUp project this Friday will help to further answer my essential question. I feel that an architecture education would be perfect for me at the moment, but I look forward to seeing if that will change!
Isabella, it is certainly true that the digital tools are an important part of the architect’s toolkit. And it is also certainly the case when approached playfully they can yield new creative possibilities. At the same time, regular sketching and back of the napkin drawings are hugely important for capturing insights and inspiration. If you are not doing it already, I’d encourage you to get a small sketchbook and spend 30-40 minutes each day taking a walk and sketching. And then try looking through these sketches to see if they provide any sparks for the class assignments.
