Critical Reflection 3 – Sofia Giglio

I think the most important way I can answer my essential question is through research and conversations with experienced people. Luckily, a close family friend works in the fashion industry and focuses a lot on sustainability. I was able to speak to her about the sustainability in the fashion industry and learn a lot about the many problems of it and what we need to change in order to move further into a sustainable life. In addition, she was also able to connect me to two people who have their own sustainable fashion brands that I will interview. I think that this is an amazing opportunity because I am able to talk to people who have actually worked in this industry and make all the decisions that make their brand more sustainable.
I think one of my biggest challenges is sewing quick enough. I am making clothing pieces I have never done before, so it is taking me longer than expected. However. I know that I am improving with each piece as I get more and more used to reading patterns and understanding the sewing language.
One of my main focuses I wanted to learn about was workers rights. Although I feel that I haven’t heard a lot about it, I have been learning more about the waste of textiles and water when dying clothes which is a huge pollutant. So, although I am not focusing on something I wanted to right now, I am learning something new that I wasn’t aware of. I do plan to do some further research on workers rights, though.
