I feel the most comfortable dancing when I am doing hip-hop styles. However, one of my contemporary classes allowed me to start to answer the second part of my essential question: What is my artistic identity?
The class was very difficult and took a look of physical strength. The teacher had us continually balance and practise our turns. Then we stretched and learned a routine. When I started doing the routine, I spent time trying to memorize the steps. But after a bit, I decided to add my own personality into the moves. The whole piece had moves of pushing and pulling and I decided to make these moves more emotional by making them bigger and waving through my body. There were some moves that reminded me of hip hop moves so I decided to make them more sharp like we do in hip hop classes.
This moment taught me that even when a class is hard, I can always add my artistic identity. I realized that in every piece I like doing body waves. It also made me realize that my artistic identity revolves around my emotions and my hip hop knowledge.
