It is important to hear a wide range of perspectives on the game of basketball, yet we do not have access to points of views that differ from mainstream sports professionals on popular media outlets. I have chosen to focus on a multitude of perspectives on basketball for my senior project to further explore the game. I have watched many shows and listened to a number of podcasts focused on the world of basketball. While I enjoyed this media, I have noticed these shows and podcasts are primarily focused on the point of views of adults. During my research, I also watched an Overtime show that featured Mikey Williams, a basketball prodigy. While I found his story to be interesting, I realized that I wanted to create content from the point of view of someone who is not planning on playing for the NBA, making my podcast more relatable to a wider audience of listeners.

As a student athlete I have hands-on experience with my topic. I have played basketball for the LREI team since the 9th grade. Additionally, I follow the NBA and bring both the perspective of a young adult and a basketball enthusiast. Lastly, I have watched many shows that create basketball-focused content. I aim to discuss being a student athlete while drawing inspiration from these sources. They have not discussed my themes which will help me to stand out in the world of basketball media.

I would like my podcast to showcase a mixture of perspectives, including those of high school athletes, coaches and college team members. I can only give my perspective, which is why I am interviewing a wide range of people who are at different points in their basketball careers and all took unique paths to get there. I want to explore and share the many perspectives and experiences on the game of basketball that a listener may not get from mainstream media.

My essential question is: As a young fan/player how do I find my voice and share the different insights of youth on the game of basketball? I believe my podcast will answer this question and highlight unique insights into basketball.

  1. This sounds fantastic! I wonder what a coach of a young group of players would say. When I say young, think Middle School or younger. How do you keep or create interest, build skills, manage feelings, create safe competitions, etc. Also, I bet it would be interesting to find out how young some of the stars were when they started. How old was MJ? Lebron? Pistol Pete Maravich? When do you start to focus in one sport? (There is a lot of science showing that multi-sport athletes are the way to go until high school.
