Critical Reflection 2- Sofia Giglio

While walking around with my friend a while ago, we were going to stop in the fast fashion store Urban Outfitters. While we were inside she had asked me why I didn’t want to buy anything. The reason was because I was uninterested in supporting a company who mass produces clothes and wasn’t completely transparent about their sourcing and the waste they produce. Although there was stuff I would be interested in buying, I knew that I could restrain myself for the greater good of the environment and fashion industry. Although my friend still purchased something, she put thought into what she was purchasing and made sure it was something which she knew she could wear a lot and wouldn’t get rid of anytime soon.

Part of my essential question being how can we achieve a more sustainable fashion industry, conversations like these are some of the most important. People fail to understand that one person making a good decision can influence others to follow their steps. One way we can help the environment is spreading information on what is worsening it and what we can do to make it better. Another example is when I saw my friend able to be a vegetarian so I became a vegetarian because I realized how farming meat has one of the biggest effects on our environment, after that my other friend went vegetarian and many of my friends have become more conscious of their meat consumption. Although I have had to make some sacrifices on what I buy or eat so I can better the environment, I know that they will help in the long run because my voice will influence others and others will make similar decisions as me!
