As I was listening to Never by JID, I saw references to passing the baton and speaking of how writing was an outlet for him to no longer be poor and express the emotions he feels after going through poverty. I think this connects to my essential question because this truly encompasses where his rap music originates. It also relates to my experiences as that’s where my poetry and music came from at first in a story sense. The storytelling aspect was also really interesting as it told a story of a kid who was always hungry and never quite satisfied with how much he had, an interesting theme I’ve seen elsewhere from the lyrical artists who constantly reference hunger and “grinding”.
