This week I wanted to start choreographing the dance. I had originally picked River by Bishop Briggs. I love how powerful this song is and how it has a lot of different textures I can use. Also I have danced to this song many times before in dance classes so I already knew it well.
My mom told me that while this was a great song, she wanted me to dance to something that relates to my heritage. She wanted me to dance to Im Nin’alu which is a song made by a Israeli singer of Yemeni descent. It is a song about God opening the doors for the people. I liked this idea but I was still set on dancing to River.
I decided to remix the two songs together on SoundTrap. I was very sceptical that this wouldn’t work but I found a way to make them make sense together. This relates to my first essential question: How can I utilize theatre and dance to create a performance piece that explores my artistic identity? In this case my dance reflects my artistic identity as it brings my culture: my Israeli Yemini side, my European side and my American side.
