I was never really taught about the importance of being eco-concious in middle school. It wasn’t until sophomore year and I was scrolling through my Youtube recommended page and saw a video of a woman named Lauren Singer, who showed, “How to Fit Two Years of Trash in a Mason Jar.” I was in shock at the end of the video to see someone create so little waste and, thus I began to go down the spiral of the many sustainability issues in our world. I quickly became inspired and devoted to cutting down my own carbon footprint while caring for the earth. As someone who used to love going to the mall, the issues of fashion sustainability especially stood out to me during my research. After this I had began to prioritize getting my clothes second hand or from sustainable shops.
I know that fashion sustainability is extremely important in our world in order to slow down global warming and the worsening affects of climate change. Textile waste is one of the largest polluters in the world with mass amounts of waste daily. 25% of water pollution is caused by the fashion industry, too. In addition to these horrible statistics, fast fashion companies often employ garment makers who make clothes in poor working conditions and with very little pay; majority of these workers are women of color. I know that with our shopping decisions, we can make a change in the fashion industry. By me learning how to make my own clothes with sustainable fabrics will be useful to me and others in the future. In addition, further studying the problems with fast fashion and spreading the information will make an impact on how people shop.
I think that my project is important because we are currently in an environmental crisis in our world. Especially in America, we create absurd amounts of waste and have some of the largest impacts on global warming because we prioritize capital over environment. I think if more people changed their habits we could create a more sustainable fashion industry and majorly help our environment. I need to research more about the damaging affects of fast fashion and the garment workers rights. I also would like to learn how to sew more so I can make an impact in my life.
