My essential question is: How can I learn about tradition and heritage through cooking. This topic is very important to me because food is a big part of Greek traditions and gatherings. My grandmother makes all the food at these big events. She is getting older and no one knows her recipes. I think it would be tragic if these recipes are lost which is why I decided to make this cookbook. Throughout the years, I’ve spent vast hours watching my Grandmother make these recipes for me and my sister. Although she never let us help I picked up numerous tips and techniques just by observing her. I have never cooked Greek food but I have been cooking every day for three years now. My experience in the kitchen will help me when it comes time to make the more labor-intensive and challenging recipes (which is almost all of them.)
This question is important to me because I want to continue the tradition of cooking classic Greek recipes. By the end of this project, I’m hoping that I will be able to make these dishes with ease. To achieve this I will be making three recipes a week. I also want to learn about the history of these dishes because most of them don’t come from Greece. With that in mind, I’m wondering: Do specific regions of Greece have unique cooking styles? How does Greek food change in each generation? And How has Greek food been Americanized?
