Critical Reflection 1 Victor Schwartz

What do I know?

I know that LREI Athletics while providing a comfortable environment to try out sports and have a good time, are not as serious as they could be. I understand that sports are not a top priority at our school but with that being said, some of the kids really love the sports and some of the coaches take it really seriously without receiving that same attitude from the athletes. Comparing this to stories I’ve heard from friends who play for their high school football teams, we seem to be lacking spirit and commitment. I’ve seen first hand the lack of commitment and spirit LREI students have for sports, empty gyms during the playoffs, half the team at a practice the day before a game, and the list goes on. I want to see what can be done to improve this sentiment around LREI sports.

What I don’t know?

With all that being said, I still have no strong ideas about how we could fix this. There are things that could be done, but I’m not sure that our school would like to do them because they don’t agree with our priorities and I’m totally happy with that because I like our school the way it is. This is why I need to speak with other athletic directors and Peter Fisher, to find out why they think people don’t come to practices and students don’t show up to support their friends when they play.

  1. Vic, you’re right we can do a better job in some regards, in other regards this particular sports program is terrific. It really depends on what you’re measuring. It’s great that it’s so open and that everyone can be part of a team. What clearly needs work is the commitment. I have some ideas about this as do the peers in your cohort group. I’m eager to see what you come up with!
