Project Title: Practising life drawing, figure drawing, and oil painting
Essential Question(s):
- How can I improve my skills through a concentrated time of practice? What are these similarities i can find between each medium and what can they teach me about patience and viewing the world through the lense of an artist?
-How can I represent these understandings through art, specifically drawing and painting?
Statement of Purpose
For my Senior Project, I will… practicing life drawing, figure drawing, and oil painting all essencial artistic tools and ones which will be challenging for me. I will do a final painting that brings all three elements together to demonstrate what I have learned.
Overview: Describe your topic and project to the committee.
Describe your project in detail, with attention to the reason why this project appeals to you and how you believe it will allow you to answer your essential question. What is the academic or intellectual scope of this project? How will this project challenge you? How does this project build on your prior learning or knowledge? How will you incorporate any or all of the 4Cs of the LREI education (courage, citizenship, critical thinking, creativity) or connect to the LREI mission statement (LINK)?
This 1-2 sentence description is your elevator pitch; it’s the short, easy to explain the description of what you will do for your project.
For this project, I will put my abilities to the test and challenge myself to work hard in areas of art that do not come easily to me. I became interested in this project as I realized that I had stayed in my comfort zone and not pushed myself to explore the harder elements of art. I will be attending RISD for college and I know that these three skills I will be practicing are crucial for all artist’s to draw from. I feel that this is the perfect time to improve my discipline, skill set, and immerse myself in art before college so I am more prepared and feel more confident with my artistry.
For the actual “doing” part of this project, I will dedicate six hours a day to work.
My essential questions will guide me as I document my progress and my challenges. the more I practice the more art I will have curated and thus the more to examine and measure my progress. my final piece will incorporate each of the three new skills I have learned and hopefully demonstrate my learning and represent how I have grown over this period of intense study. I will also include written pieces along the way documenting my thought processes notes and questions that have arisen. In the end, I will provide my own reflections about my work and my learning experience.
How will you measure your success?
Success should not be measured by product but by process and learning. What outcome from your project will indicate to you that your experience has been a success? What personal goals or achievements will indicate success? If you have a product-based project, what is that product, and how will you measure the success of that product?
-Learn how to see more accurately so I can be more correct in my drawing
-Learn from people who are masters of their craft
-Reflect thoughtfully along the way on my findings through writing
Resource List
Consider this the bibliography of Senior Project. What resources have you identified to push your understanding? List publications, institutions, media, books, websites, people with whom you have connected, etc that relate to your project. Include the book you will be reading.
Books I want to read:
On Drawing and Painting: John Sloan
The Art Spirit: Robert Henri
The Artist’s Way: Julia Cameron
A Life Spent Painting: Philip Guston
The Brooklyn Museum, as well as the Guggenheim and the MET, will all be excellent recources.
Pop up art exhibits and installations in NYC
Daily Plan & Schedule
Describe, in as much detail as possible, what you will be doing day to day or through the course of a week. This schedule needs to make it clear how you will spend your 30 hours each week. LREI classes, clubs, and ensembles should be noted; cohort groups will likely meet first and second periods on Mondays and Thursdays. (You will also complete a log of hours worked and tasks accomplished for each week of the project).
-Drawing in the park for three hours from life -interpreting at least 3 dreams per day, ideally also creating 3 collages
-reading for an hour from a book I have listed
-Oil painting in my house
-Writing my daily reflections and questions in my notebook
Documentation Plan
Explain why this is the appropriate documentation for you and your project and how this plan fits your project. If you plan to use platforms other than the Senior Project blog, please make sure to include them here (e.g., another blog, journal, Google Doc, Instagram, etc.), intended frequency of updates, general description of the content (reflective writing, photos, essays, etc), the URL for digital documentation or the sharing plan for analog documentation. (Documentation must be updated at least twice per week and be accessible to the committee.)
I am going to be creating a collection of pieces that demonstrate my best pieces under each area I am studying. This will be visible on an online website that will be easily accessible.
