- What is your guiding, underlying question?
How might a study of philosophy and major philosophical ideas with a focus on value theory and aesthetics change the way I approach topics of beauty, art, human conduct, nature, and more through photography? - Include any sub-questions you have identified.
Which forms of media will give me an intersectional or broader lens on the content I will study? How might I apply what I learn to my creative photography process? Which forms of expression will help me demonstrate what I learned? Who might I look to for inspiration? How might this project influence my day to day habits?
- Why do these questions matter? Are they connected to some prior experience? Curiosity? Wonder? What’s the story?
Each of these questions are important to me because they serve as a guide for my study. I want to make sure that I don’t limit myself with the materials that I decide to use for this project. I also wanted to give myself freedom with the creative process because I might find inspiration with different forms of expression. I also asked how it might affect my day to day habits because I’m hoping that reading and taking pictures will encourage me to get outside more, eat better, and get a better sleep schedule.
- What if any steps, experiences, or products have you identified as necessary for answering your essential question?
- I need to come up with a set plan for which specific topics I want to explore during this time. This will include reading parts of some of my books, watching some of my videos and doing a little bit of research on philosophy in general. This will also help me prepare for the project in general because it’ll give me a better understanding of what I’ll be studying!
- What form do you propose your project take? Explain what you already know about the area of study or professional field you will be immersed in. Describe how you hope to spend your time during Senior Project. (This should be largely the same idea you’ve developed based on your feasibility work.)
My Daily plan includes reading at least 2-3 chapters/sections, listening to at least one podcast episode or watching at least one of my philosophy videos. I will probably end up changing this depending on what I find works for me. I will also complete the daily journal – take notes on what I read/watch/listen to and reflect on what I learned. I will also use my journal to pose questions that I’ll explore! This might also include posting on instagram everyday (I could also make use of the highlight function)
My weekly plan includes covering at least two-ish topics of interest:
- This means reading/listening/watching the appropriate materials for the topic
- Complete journaling for topic
- Something to show for the creative piece – this could vary
- Document the findings that inspired my creative pieces on instagram
I would also like to incorporate yoga and daily walks into this project. My goals in recent years have been to better myself and my mental state and I’ve found stability and versions of peace in yoga and going for walks around my neighborhood! Daily walks are great for when I want to listen to podcasts and I can find new reading locations!
I plan on documenting my learnings through a journal. I don’t want this to be an extremely formal project because I find that a more casual learning environment helps me stay motivated. I plan documenting my findings in the journal throughout the process. The journal will consist of notes and observations as well as my thinking on how certain concepts apply to my life and the world around me as I experience it. I then plan on channelling my thoughts into photography which I hope will result in an artistic and creative demonstration of my growth. My focused study on the above mentioned book about the philosophy of art and beauty will likely be my biggest inspiration for my photography. I’m isolated in Long Island which will give me the chance to go on meditative walks on the beach, dunes, my neighborhood and more. I will use those walks and other excursions to channel my thinking into photography. I find that when I learn something that excites me, I can easily channel that into inspiration for my work. This is what I’m hoping I can do with this project. I have access to my film and digital cameras which I’ll use to document both people (perhaps my family or friends) and the outside world (environment, strangers, etc.).
- What do you hope to learn through this experience? How do you see the proposed experience addressing your essential question? How will you know you have had a successful project? How will you tell the story of your project?
By the end of this project I hope to have produced a significant amount of meaningful work that reflects what I’ve learned and what has impacted me most. I will be reading many influential texts and I want to make sure that all my forms of documentation express my reaction and reflection on those texts or ideas. I hope that I also have a chance to explore different ideas based on what I learn, especially with my discussion podcasts that open up ideas of philosophy to modern interpretation. I hope to carry my knowledge with me and apply it to whatever I do in the future. The holistic approach to philosophical concepts will give me a broader perspective on my learnings and hopefully I won’t find myself trapped by limited interpretations. Part of my learning process will be to read and understand the information and then come to my own conclusions about how these topics impact my life and the people around me. I plan on creating a book with some of my writing and my photos as a display of my project. I would pair my thoughts in writing with the pictures I took when I was inspired to show how my thinking changed throughout the process.
