Essential questions
What are the limitations of surfboard design? How experimental and strange can I get with surfboard shapes and contours?
Plan
- Continue shaping boards throughout the year
- In manhattan I have a space in my basement that I use to shape my surfboards. It’s not the best space as it is very small and dirty, but I can use this space all year and whenever I want. The process of shaping can seem very repetitive and tiresome but I really enjoy doing it. There are also many steps to making a single board so I know I won’t get bored.
- Study hydrodynamic design
- Study older surfboard shapers and their theories
- Maybe find some more stuff on the basics of hydrodynamic design (maybe military stuff)
- Try the boards out myself and experience the design first hand. Each design produces a different feeling on the wave. Through getting to know my boards, I can learn what works and what doesn’t, I want to be able to equate a design to a feeling.
- The spring time is known to have good surfing conditions. It is very cold at this time of year but I already have the equipment to surf in cold weather.
- Rockaway beach is very easily accessible and I know I will have friends to go with me
- Aesthetic design:
- There are many ways of designing the outside of the board
- Painting on boards
- Resin tint (colors and resin art)
- Markers
- Etc. (pretty much anything that doesn’t damage the foam.)
- There are many ways of designing the outside of the board
- Learn how to create a business
- Study what it means to make a business and carry it out
- I want to start selling these boards, but I have no idea what it really mean to create a business. Maybe I can do something simple through Instagram or make a website.
End Goal
- Create a surfboard business
- Develop brand (name, etc)
- Create Instagram and website
- Put older boards that I made up for sale, and eventually put this collection of boards up on the website
- Have a unique collection of technically advanced surfboards
- Learn about hydrodynamic design apply that to my shapes
