Fivethirtyeight Internship

How can mathematical modeling and statistical analysis serve as a framework for better understanding the world around us?

In order to address this question, I’d love to intern with fivethirtyeight. Their data-driven reporting of sports and politics is the perfect blend of the three fields I am most interested in.

I absolutely see this as feasible, however, I am sure that the internship (if offered) will be competitive.

Yankees

How can mathematical modeling and statistical analysis serve as a framework for better understanding the world around us?

This is another way of exploring the same essential question. Interning in the Yankee’s analytics department would be amazing. It would allow me to learn about how they go about processing data and transforming the data into strategies and gameplans. I’d also gain valuable insight into their process and the world of sports analytics, something that I am incredibly passionate about and am considering as a career path.

Though the MLB season is up in the air with corona and there’s a question of whether or not they’d take more people in the middle of the pandemic, I do see this as a viable, though likely competitive, option.

Con Law

How can we uphold the framework of our society while simultaneously promoting positive change?

In 11th grade, after taking con law and elections classes, I became really interested in the court systems. Potentially getting an internship with a law firm working on pursuing reversing or upholding a law as unconstitutional or constitutional would be incredible. It would provide me with insight into how our judicial system works and how our laws are checked.

I also think it would be an interesting way of exploring the balance between what our founders wanted when they drafted the constitution and what we want now. There is an apparent nuance in balancing the interests of the two time periods (and generally sides of the political spectrum) and I think that could be an interesting thing to pursue.

In terms of feasibility, I think this project is absolutely possible, it would just take a lot of cold calls and reaching out to firms/people.
