Cate Woolsey – Working Draft Blog Post

For my senior project, I want to explore historical art in contemporary society.
Through recontextualizing famous works of art (after looking at their histories) I allow people to gain a different perception of the modern world that we live in.

Essential questions: For my senior project, the essential questions that I want to focus on are:
How can I gain a deeper understanding of historical paintings?
How do I demonstrate the development and growth of art throughout the years?
How do I use traditional paintings with newer forms of art in order to reflect a more culturally relevant set of ideas?

Plan Ideas:

These questions matter to me as I enjoy making and viewing art. I want to find a way to help people appreciate older pieces of art, while demonstrating a change of time. My plan for my senior project would be to collect images of famous historical pieces of art, such as the Mona Lisa (1503), THE SISTINE CHAPEL CEILING (1508), THE TREACHERY OF IMAGES, 1929, Nighthawks (1942),  “The Japanese Footbridge and the Water Lily Pool, Giverny” (1899), and look at them through a modern lens. The pieces that I am interested in are all from vari0us time periods, as well as artists.

In today’s society, I think that many factors have changed the world of art (for example social media, memes, etc). Through studying various pieces of historical art, and recontextualizing the old ones using various forms of pop culture, I can gain a deeper understanding of the growth and meaning of art. Perhaps it will also be a chance to help others perceive the new world that we live in today.

Feasibility: This project idea would be feasible as I can do it at home, or school. While I can do research online, there are many books that I can use as well. I can go to museums (Moma, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Guggenheim) in the city (socially distanced).

ALTERNATIVE:
I think that I want to go around the city, pick up litter, and turn it into art. Any litter that I pick up will be cleaned and set out for 24 hours+. I will be doing research regarding how to send a message using the art that I create and what will make people donate to potential environmental organizations. What are different ways to catch the eyes of individuals outside with a piece of art or image?
