Caleb Kohn-Blank Initial Plan Draft

For my senior project, I want to explore design and development, specifically: what is the relationship between design and development. How does something change from initial concept to finished product. To attempt to answer this question, I’d like to develop a game. Games are changed a lot from their inception to their completion, so I think being able to compare the original ideas of a game to its final product would offer some insight into my question.

To create a game that attempts to answer this question, I’d first start by creating a game design document, a document explaining all initial ideas, before beginning to create my game. I would have the goal of completing one prototype of my game each week at varying stages of development and have it be playtested. As it’s tested I would take notes of things that are going well and need to be changed, and I would implement those next week. This would give me a clear picture of each step of development when I look back at the project from its completion. At the end, I would have a clear start and endpoint, with everything in between also being documented, and from there I could begin drawing conclusions.

I believe that this project would be feasible, as it could easily be completed at home or in a world with fewer covid restrictions. For building my game, I would need to buy some materials but I would be able to create the game at home. For playtesting I could use my family at home, or if I have the ability to be in school, I could ask students to play, or I could do both!
