Jack Trowbridge – Prototypes and Initial Thoughts

Reflection:

I went into Senior Project not really having much idea of what I wanted to do, and this is still the case. The two topics that I gravitate towards the most are music and government/law. Music definitely fulfills the “what I love” and “what I’m good at” circles, but I’m not so sure how I would structure a music project to fulfill the “need in the world” circle. I have also done many music projects before, and I would have to find some new/more challenging way of approaching it if I did a musical Senior Project (maybe writing original songs and recording all the instruments myself? What would be the theme of the songs, if any? Could I use lyrics and instrumentation to address some social issue, and what would that issue be?)

One of the things that I considered on Friday was the idea of teaching, particularly teaching government/law. I think the topic can fulfill all three “purpose” circles, as I think it’s really important for people to know about civics and law in a time where everything from our elections to public health is in crisis. Making the law accessible to people (maybe kids, maybe just unknowledgeable adults) can be really empowering for having productive, informed conversations. It’s also something that I’m interested in, so I would be more driven to teach it. I’m just unsure about medium of teaching would be, who I would teach to, and what exactly I would teach.
