Persepolis means Persian city. This book is a graphic novel about a girl growing up in Iran during the revolution. It’s also about the coming of age of the girl, Marjane Satrapi. Through the book, she grows up and learns all about her country and her family. To start out with she is 10 years old and the first book ends when she is 14 or 15.

The Iranian revolution was when their ruler, the Shah, was being unfair to the people
and, being a bad Shah. Her father is a photographer who photographs the revolution. Marjane’s favorite uncle is arrested and executed. She witnesses riots, demonstrations, and down right violence. She is asked to leave home by her mother and father, to go to France. Her parents believe it is too dangerous in Iran for her.

People who like memoirs, graphic novels, good art, and learning about other cultures that are very different from ours will love Persepolis. It is a amazing book that everyone will love.  The art is in black and white and  looks like art made by a child. The art give a good clue to the perspective that Marjane Satrapi had when she was a child. Persepolis is made up of two books: Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood and Persepolis: The Story of a Return. I would definitely recommend this to people who like those things. I would even recommend this to people who are bored and are looking for something good to read.

Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood is now available in your school library.
