What I did:

My group and I talked to Houry Geudelekian about the issues of women and media and what their organization does to help ameliorate it. In the process, we learned a bit about her life as well.

What I learned:

I learned that the most important thing to do as a woman (or frankly, anyone who is being treated with injustice) in society is to speak up, know your facts, and to be educated.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

Through this fieldwork, I learned how important it is to take action and speak up; even using the media to do so. The woman we met with, Houry Geudelekian, was a child bride, and when she got older decided to speak up about the injustice involved. She started fighting against challenges women were facing as well. She eventually divorced her husband and is happy on her own. This is an example of how important it is to be educated and speak up–because if she didn’t, she could have been under the impression that women’s lives are supposed to be chosen by their parents and dictated other people.
